I went from the US to UK for grad school and stayed put. Yes, salaries are low and there is definitely some sticker shock (esp in HCOL cities like London) but overall, I love it here. Way more multicultural, great food, and super interesting people. Plus, you have all of Europe at your doorstep for less than $100 to most places which is hard to pass up. You move here for quality of life, rather than income IMO
Agree with the above. Although I would actually say things work out roughly the same if not just a small difference between what you take home monthly after expenses. UK may be lower in income but you have the benefits of free healthcare, much smaller student loan debts, fantastic pension schemes, much lower cost of living and rent is significantly cheaper (depending on where you are in the UK of course). Germany for example is even better when it comes to employment benefits with a similar if not better wage bracket. The higher wages in US need to reflect the payouts to live and work there.
Following ! I am planning on making a move from the UK to Texas in April
I moved from the U.K. to CA just over 2 years ago, just before the pandemic kicked in. It was tough at first through the first lockdown as a lot of recruitment was frozen. Rent dropped for a while but has started to rocket again.
No, I wasn’t allowed to work when I first arrived (spouse visa). Got my work permit just before first lockdown and then nobody was hiring!
It wasn't an easy adjustment but I was born in the US and had family here so it made it less stressful. Had trouble understanding accents from the South but eventually got used to them.
