"But thanks to reagaonomics, prison turned to profits.
Cause free labor is the cornerstone of US Economics.
Cause slavery was abolished, unless you are in prison.
You think I am bullshitting, then read the 13th amendment.
Involuntary servitude and slavery it prohibits. That's why they giving drug offenders time in double digits" -Killer Mike, Reagan
They aren't slaves, they are repaying their debt to society.
Thirteen amendment, "Neither slavery nor involuntary servitude, except as punishment for crime whereof the party shall have been duly convicted, shall exist in the United States, or any place subject to their jurisdiction." I.e., if you're convicted, we can enslave you as punishment. Inmates make and produce more things than people realize. Private prisons exist to make profits on these facilities as well. I won't hazard a judgement on this, still not informed on all aspects, but it's important to be informed of the dealings we implicitly agree to here in the US.
My dad used prison labor to build his house. The Work Release program at the local prison is full of highly skilled people who work inexpensively. Prison takes most of their earnings as restitution or something. Sounds terrible, but the guys were pumped to have a few weeks out.
Being a slave and repaying your debt to society aren't mutually exclusive. The amendment basically says you can be enslaved in order to repay your debt to society.
