Interesting and concerning story with valid observations. I live in what I consider a rural area even though it’s less than 30 minutes from a city. We haven’t had any cicadas this year, even though the area has abundant small and large wildlife, little pavement, no know chemical concerns past or present. The area in the city a short distance away from 38th or 42nd street have cicadas even though they have lots of pavement, many people and urban heat effect. Interesting. My oldest son is a 28 year old scientist, he was mentored by data collection expert at a nuclear facility as he began his career. The mentor stressed than an observation and scientific conclusion are totally different. When setting up data collection even if you feel sure you know what the results will be you must design the data to be impartial. Go to lengths so you really don’t know how the results will come in. The video was interesting and stated some concerning facts but was just an observation. The environment factors could have something to do with lack of cicadas but maybe not. Unfortunately unknowingly crying racism reminds me of the story I was read as a small child about about the boy who cried Wolf. If you always cry racism based on a preconceived idea, your credibility of point out racism where it actually exist will be greatly diminished.

The gentleman’s statement may be accurate (neither he nor you nor I know) based on the information presented. We don’t have cicadas in my area which seems to have perfect environmental conditions. That’s the point you can’t tell students they don’t hear cicadas because of racism when you don’t know the reason why. Either there’s other variables in some or all other areas which don’t have cicadas or racism is the reason there area no cicadas every area there missing.

Yes, it’s easy to find a map that will show where broods emerge and where they don’t. But I think you’re missing the point of the article.

When you view everything through the lens of racism, it’s a problem. Governments are ran by humans, humans make mistakes. That doesn’t mean every mistake is inherently rooted in racism. I am not necessarily talking about this particular topic, just in general.

Similar has happened over the history of the U.S. and across the nation/cities (i.e., redlining, Flint water crisis, oil refinery and other manufacturing toxins, lead poisoning, health disparities, food deserts, and frequently in BICOP communities).

Yes I am “most familiar” - with my K16 beginnings! Lake Huron once provided the healthiest glacier water on the plant (via Detroit system). GM’s corporate headquarters originated in Flint and later moved to Detroit. Flint’s officials committed crimes in exchange for profit ( this is our national/global legacy, and most often at the expense of BIPOC communities and their health- domestically). The small details may change from case -to-case. Scientist and Climate change experts say that we/US has an enormous responsibility herein regarding global health, including our own (which has some of the poorest health outcomes for “all US citizens”- given our wealth as a measure among all nations, and compared to other wealthy nations- OCED). The Big3 contributed as well in their early years and before OSHA and other regulatory requirements for health and safety- BICOP communities hit the hardest. As indigenous cultures share “It is all connected”— we are all connected on this planet. What hurts one eventually hurts all creation: Pandemic -2021.

We discuss where environmentally bad things are placed like trash dumps, mines, oil refineries, freeways, pipelines and how you think those decisions are made. Ask the question, "How would you feel if that happened in your neighborhood?"

That’s actually a long debated problem in the West, but not for the reasons listed in that article. Out here we usually refer to environmental racism in the context of how it affects native peoples. For example, the Goshute tribe of the Skull Valley reservation in Utah sits next to several superfund sites. There’s an old nerve gas storage facility, a hazardous waste landfill or two, a magnesium plant, and others. And that’s not an isolated case. Lots of native peoples find the lands surrounding their reservations being coopted for industrial purposes that pose high environmental risks. Lots of native peoples were also part of the “down winders” AKA the people who lived down wind of atomic weapons tests during the Cold War.

@IHS1, Wow.

This is why I should have taken the retirement offer my district offered this past year.

My takeaway: how on earth do you still have a job if you don't have the ability to teach the required standards each year? Do you not have the ability to plan your lessons to incorporate the major and the minor standards for each lesson? In this case, I would say your values would GREATLY impact your ability to do your job, because if you're ignoring or not getting to standards that conflict with your personal belief structure, you're directly imposing your own socioeconomic, religious, and political beliefs on your students.

That’s right. Racism is the root cause. Great article, @EST.

Wow! Thanks for the education. I'm am aware of some of those issues but have never classified them through the lens of racism. New perspective. 👍🏼👊🏼

The article was an example of applying a logical framework to answer a question. Attempting to invalidate its conclusion by the use of anecdotes is really a disservice.

I might “cry racism” if I go into a restaurant and see only BIPOC seated in the back or near the kitchen. That’s based on an observation. I understand your critique, simply not your attempt to invalidate their (seemingly) very valid process.

Why do some companies ask for 8+ YoE + MBA for mid-management positions (Manager, Sr. manager, Associate, Sr. Associate). At 8 YoE the super talented people would probably be looking for director level roles. Wouldn’t it be better to get them at like 3-5YoE?
