Can we concede that these protests did address a very serious issue and a noble cause and a fundamental human right AND ALSO caused mass gatherings with no social distancing that very likely resulted in that spike in cases?
Somehow that has become a political issue where people will only admit to one of those things.

I did. And most articles have similar statements (did not lead to increase, or inconclusive at best). The article OP posted states the opposite.

Even if protests contributed, let’s think about what exacerbated. Police are corralling protestors into small spaces and then tear gassing and pepper spraying. Nothing like forcing a lack of social distancing and then making everyone cough
