Intern here. Really struggling to handle the long hours and lack of work-life balance in PA. Is it even worth hanging in here until I qualify?

Intern - just remeber you are getting paid time and a half. Enjoy.

like

If you struggle now why would you join full time? It’s probably not going to get better and this can be your trial run to figure out this isn’t for you.

like

PA is a great place to start your career. If you can deal with the hours and enjoy the work at least 1/2 the time, I would say it’s worth it.

like

Remember, there’s more to life than PA... so many other routes you can take with an accounting background if you choose

like

Well you can get advice all you want but at the end of the day you have to be happy. What do you want to do? If you are going to leave after 3 years is 3 years really required for what you want? As an intern I wasn’t already thinking about exit opportunities so if you are an intern already thinking about it I would consider that a flag to consider thoughtfully.

Our interns aren't even allowed to work more than 8 hour days. Feel lucky you're getting paid overtime

like

It will only get worse, so it’s up to you if you are a glutton for pain like we all are.

I was an intern and worked 45 hrs a week on avg. I did request to have more client engagements though. It depends on what you do at work. I’m an analyst right now for a big IT company waiting for my full time to start with RSM this summer. And 8 hours there seems like 12 hours at RSM. It all depends on the work I guess.

like

You’re struggling with the work and you get paid hourly? You’re not gonna make it as an associate

like

@AS1, yeah that’s part of the reason I was asking. Performance-wise I’m doing well, but it’s balancing work with my personal life and mental health that I struggle with. My initial plan was to stay here until I qualify and then make a move, but I’d only be comfortable committing to full-time if I know my ‘sacrifice’ now will be worth it later, if that makes sense. Responses seem positive so far though :)

smart

I had these thoughts during the internship but felt like I had come this far and couldn’t easily pivot at that point. Was easier to just accept the offer than find something else. I regret it

like

Thank you everyone :)

I don’t get paid time and a half :( If I did that would definitely change things LOL, but it’s good to hear my experience here will be worth it later

Awks l think I used the wrong term. I’m a co-op associate in Canada, salaried not hourly. Always assumed interns and co-ops were the same thing

If anyone is interested in pursuing an IB summer internship for summer 2023, especially freshman and sophomores, recruitment and preparation season is NOW

How to approach it?
1) Network - send out coffee chat emails to alums or any professional at the firms you want to apply to
2) Prep technicals, behaviorals
3) Insights/Diversity programs - look for any that are still open and apply ASAP if you qualify, they can lead to an accelerated interview process
4) Find when apps usually open

Currently interning at an asset management firm as a service desk analyst - I started the internship beginning of August 2021. Making $20 an hour wasn’t bad when I first was hired as this was my first internship and I wanted the experience. I’ve been working almost full-time while going to school because the firm needs the help and I wanted to make an impression on management. They’ve noticed and talked to me about it - is it inappropriate to ask for a raise? I handle the same issues as the FTE
