Internalized racism is the biggest demon Asians are facing today. As someone who grew up in Asia, it's hard to understand that mindset.

Why do you put up with Asian jokes?
Why do you refuse to date Asians?
Why don't you fight for our justice?

I have so many questions. If you don't respect yourself, how can you expect others to respect you. You hate being us, but I bet you still love sushi, pho and use technology created by us.

People don't have the power unless you choose to give them.

Honestly as someone who grew up in a predominately white area, especially when my parents’ ideal of a good life is modeled after the typical white nuclear family and the reason why they moved to the US, it took a long time to undo the internalized racism. Especially when all I wanted to do was to “be white” and fit into those ideals

Lots of little things you can do to fight this.

Show your children examples of successful, strong, beautiful Asians so they have role models. Make sure the people they look up to aren’t all just stereotypical white people.

Don’t give your kids white names (never understood this one). White people can learn how to say Schwarzenegger and Strombolopolous. They can learn other names too.

I have never had anyone who's not Asian crack an Asian joke to my face. And I've dated far more Asian women than non-Asian women.

What is it exactly that you want? For all Asians to constantly be on the hunt for anything that could be perceived as a slight, and to go forth and procreate so there are more Asian people?

Why do you assume that mixed children, or interracial couples somehow diminishes the ability for children of fully Asian couples to be proud and confident global citizens? You make a whole lot of assumptions there in your comment…

Yeah, as somehow who didn’t grow up here the level of self hatred in some AA is definitely off-putting. Gave up trying to understand it.

I grew up in white areas and my parents have taught me to fit in. That’s really it. We change our real names to American names. Almost no other racial group does that.

I am currently on leave after having my baby and received word from my boss/owner of the agency that we are downsizing. He communicated a decrease of my hours from full time to part time upon my return. I have a great set of skills that have made me successful in my unique position (graphic design for advertisements, logo creation, marketing initiatives, office swag) in addition to being a licensed insurance agent. Does anyone have any advice for how I navigate this change?

struggling in my relationship. Recently my bf’s been struggling with his mental health so I mentioned to him that he might want to consider finding a therapist for daily maintenance. 9 months later, he hasn’t done it and he’s become a wreck - struggling at grad school, not helping in the house, messing up/not doing critical tasks like paying rent. But he wont help himself and just complains, and he’s starting to hurt my mental health too. Any advice to help him help himself is appreciated!

- Yes fix it in the product, I’ve mentioned this like 3 times already!
- You don’t listen! You never listen! Focus!
- I don’t like that you don’t have precision I refuse anything less than perfect
And all these remarks are towards women in the team.
He’s operating as managing partner taking on more or less product management, while we have a senior product manager on the team that he cripples(a female)

Fellow Asian fish
Any advice for how to respond to the interview question that I've received a lot and not answered well IMO "this job is tough. Long hours. How do you plan on coping when times get really tough?"

I say
-support system (family)
-keeping long term goal in mind. With a why you can survive any how
-part of the process

Don't love my answer though any advice appreciated. These are for PE/IBD/Consulting roles

I have worked 6 years in the midwest and have found it nearly impossible to built mentorship and strong work relationships with senior white people (both genders) above age 45 who are US born and bred, the WASPy kind. I can never find a way to network into their "groups". Yet I've been able to build awesome relationships with senior people and mentors who are Indian, Asian, Brown and European white. Its deplorable and disheartening to see the recent trend is anti-AAPI hate crimes across the US. While many of us are lucky to not be physically harmed, emotional stress, micro-aggressions, racism, gaslighting and stereotyping have always existed. On a positive swing of things, how have you overcome this adversity? How have you developed allies? How have you overcome the "bamboo ceiling"? Looking for stories of victories in calling out racism.

Have a question to Asians here. I’m mid-30s from Asia and am making lower end of 6 figures currently. My older sister was making more than I did until a few months back and lost one job due to covid so is now not making much. But she is married and has a house and a car of her own. She spends a lot of money on herself and buys gifts to her boyfriends/lovers. I just found out mom is going through major surgery in my home country and it costs nearly 6k. I asked if she wanted us to help her pay.

I need advice or tips on how to sound more confident during calls. I know what I’m talking about but get anxious about making other people look back, especially the client. I’ll phrase things as a question to nudge the client in the right direction instead of making it a statement or an “we should first discuss x”. I also use filler words like I think. I use to be very direct but then got feedback I was too direct and now I don’t know to get back my confidence
