I learned to focus on myself the hard way. At a previous job, I was promised a lot of opportunities career-wise by a program manager. After accepting the job, the program manager moved departments three months later, and all the promises evaporated. Since then, I just think about myself when making a decision.
Yea you really do have to be careful. I was in a similar situation many years ago. The thing that sucks is that when they are acquired often there will be lots of changes and things beyond your control.
Just know that there is a strong possibility they say well we only need our reps to sell xyz and they drop that sales team that’s being merged, or they reduce the size of the team and slowly bump them out… Acquiring company will always favor their employees over the companies they buy.
Joining a company recently acquired can be a great opportunity to get in on the ground floor of a new venture. It can also be a bit risky, as the company may be in flux and the direction it is heading may not be clear.
I have a mixed opinion on this. I've experienced it myself so it really depends on the outcome of the merger.
