“We don’t see color” is a lazy person trying to justify the lack of diversity. That company is NOT for you.
What they think of diversity in x company? Or how do they think x company is dealing with D&I issues? Most of them gave me a “diversity is about different points of views, we don’t just see color” answers. Only the most senior leader gave me some examples but they all really had to think about it. Left feeling very unsatisfied as it seemed like they felt very turned off by the question
They've told you who they are. They don't value diversity.
That’s not the place for you then. Sorry to hear about it as you probably wanted that job
It’s good to ask the question. Agency leaders need to hear that Diversity is part of a candidate’s consideration for taking a new job. A few young white people have asked this question too which speaks to a wider issue of what kind of industry we are and want to be in the future. 👍👍👍
Nope. you should dip ASAP. Someone’s racial racial identity is part of their POV. Not seeing color is just and easy way to ignore issues of race which is easy for most white folks not so easy for POC.
Not seeing color is a microagression.... deletes your racial and ethnic experience which is not that of a white, privileged male.
Thanks everyone for the responses. I surely doubted myself in even asking that question to everyone afterwards — should I have asked? Was it too direct? We’re they going to see me as someone asking to play my “minority” card? And then I have to tell myself to stfu because you’re all right and being insecure about these things is part of the problem
“We don’t see color.”
"...Yeah, I don’t see color either."
OP, that sucks. Were all 9 of them in senior positions that actually can have a say in the company diversity efforts? Not surprised to hear the question made them uncomfortable, probably out right admitting a lack of diversity would be like trashing the employer. But maybe if you joined them you could make a difference or? Follow your instinct though
Props to you for asking.
Nine people?!?! Ridiculous.
Cultures within media is such a huge conversation. Is anybody going to say the obvious? A westernized person isn’t going to be able to fully embody or translate a message saturated in a culture they “don’t see.” Let’s not overlook ethnic diversity for the sake of an “equal” or PC conversation. Various subcultures are going to need their own personal voice.
“Cultural appropriation” would be the blending of media cultures and the unification of visual communication efforts, but for the sake of preservation, we as a society have decided to purposefully segregate visual references and stylizations. This creates segregation in the conversation strategy. Opening up niche studio opportunities and creative rolls which call for “cultural expertise” within various cross culture conversations.
It’s about speaking to your audience and your ability to do so efficiently.
It’s important to realize media cultures and society, particularly online communities, have moved beyond the boundaries of race and physical characteristics. They’ve become more about personal and shared experiences. Various levels of emotions. Having stemmed from a singular shared experience of race would put demographics at an early alignment but, they’ve shifted, moved and integrated into various alignments.
Now we’re talking about who’s the client, what are you hiring for and reaching towards a representative or ambassador to properly mediate the conversation. Media translators?
