Interviewed for an industry position last week and asked my interviewers what my hours would look like. They answered "uhh 40?" with a confused look. I explained to them my crazy hours in PA and why I wanted to ask, and they just laughed and said that no overtime is expected. Either public accounting really screwed up my view on work hours, or this is just an abnormally relaxed company.

If so, I doubt it could be much worse than the beating I'm taking now

I have hired a ton of people and never told them they would have no OT. I would generally say, something like. Folks usually work 40-45 hours, and very rarely do we ask anyone to work on the weekend. The role you speak of may not be challenging enough.

OP: I would think a relevant, dynamic internal audit team would have management ask them to look into problems and want an answer timely. During those times, I would expect the group would work more than 40 hours a week. If you are looking for a stable 40 forty hour a week role and aren’t too concerned about having high profile projects, this would be a good role for you.

Realistically you‘ll have busy weeks and quiet weeks. Hopefully it will be more seasonal than PA. I’m currently in a Group Finance role, so we tend to work a little bit of overtime (say, 8pm) towards the back end of reporting, but that is balanced out by non-busy weeks where I send me team home at 5:15pm. I have way more balance in my work life than I did as a B4 manager and am much happier. If the work sounds interesting and the team is nice, go for it!
