Basically, yeah. First, have a minimum number. Then, if the offer is better than that, know before the conversation how much more you’re wanting to ask for. Another 5k? Round up to the nearest 10 thousand, so 87 becomes 90? Have a minimum, and have a plan. And if the offer completely blows you away (like 30 or more over your minimum), graciously say that sounds great and inquire further about PTO and bonus expectations, 401k matching, etc. Maybe they can add a percent of match to retirement funds or give you a few extra personal days if they’re stingy with those.
You’re welcome! Oh, and don’t go “uhh well um...” when they give you the number because then they know they beat you and you’re scrambling to come up with something on the spot.

I always say need to think about it in terms of total comp. then come back after a day or so with a counter. Knowing your min as SC1, said is key.
Carefully and politely, and in an e-mail so it’s in writing and they can’t blame a phone snafu as the reason for lowballing you
Have a reason. Our 401k match is shit. Say you get more currently and are factoring that in as part of total.
