Many states dont even allow that question at interviews any more
I always lie and add 15k.
I sparred with a partner over this during my interview - I pointed out that there was pending legislation to ban that question. The partner told me it was still legal to ask, and I told him that in light of the pending legislation I was not going to answer. It was horrifying. But somehow I got the job and that partner is the BEST boss and mentor so good luck! ☺️
Good on you. If you won’t fight for yourself, why would they expect you to fight for the client. Probably loved that you didn’t back down.
It’s probably an illegal question, but that depends on which state you’re in. They’re relatively new laws that prohibit this question, and I wouldn’t want to come off as difficult by responding “you can’t ask me that question,” so if it comes up, I like the above approach (“I’d rather not discuss, but my expectations are X”)
I was honest in answering that question on an application and feel like it probably hurt me in salary negotiations.
They still ask that question? I would just tell them that is rather not share, and maybe offer how much you're expecting to be paid instead
Can’t get what you don’t ask for
Prefer not to respond to what you currently make.
“I’m looking to earn X.” If pressed further, you could go with, “I currently work at a non-profit, so you already have an idea that my current salary is on the low end. I want to make a change but the pay needs to be commensurate as well.”
When I applied for my current job I came from a state clerkship where the salary was public knowledge so I simply said that I received that salary because the position was taken for the experience and didn’t meet my financial obligations and I needed to earn X to be comfortable.
You can always flip it. Let me know the salary for this position and I’ll tell you if it is acceptable
Be honest.
They’re going to offer you the same salary regardless, but why be dishonest
