IQVIA thinking of joining IQVIA from a custom primary research firm. I’d like to use it as a springboard to an insights role in a Pharma company. Just curious what people’s experiences are like, and any advice on what to focus on to make the eventual transition to a pharma-side job.

I currently work at IQVIA and also have a PhD. I agree with some of the points- IQVIA is big and culture varies depending on the department. For consulting services (where I sit), the work has been great- wide variety across TAs, wide variety across projects (strategy, pricing and market access, brand and launch). Most of our projects are repeat clients- that tells me the current clients are very happy with our work! The WLB is pretty decent for consulting- about 45 to 55 hours a week. Typical exit is to a large pharma.

People are very supportive in general. In fact, I had a detailed conversation with my development lead (mentor equivalent) on what my short and long goals are. I was very honest about it and he suggested what projects and partners I could work with which would provide me with good client exposure and potential exits to large Pharma. You just need to find the right people who can help you out. Most consultants exiting from IQVIA to large Pharma come back as clients- so people are typically very supportive of such exits.

I want to speak in support of iqvia against what some post here. IQVIA is an absolute top firm for LS consulting in Europe, recently ranked #3. You can also tell this from our rates that are close to MBB although our projects are typically smaller. In US I would guess so too. Culture highly depends on the department - in consulting services its really good.

I heard IQ is a decent company. That’s the typical route. People typically get CRO experience prior to transitioning to Pharma

The CRO side is top tier, but the hc consulting arm, there's better ones out there

Curious how to get a sense for WLB in interviews. Will people generally give you a straight answer? I don’t want to get stuck in a group working crazy hours.

Completely agree with you A1

Primary Research to Consulting can be difficult. Make sure you hone your organizational and client facing skills. Can’t speak to the Insights jump but going from primary research to LS/HC consulting gives you solid footing on a necessary skill. Practice your excel, deck making, and thought partnership and you’ll be fine.

What kind of experience, TAs, methodologies?

We need qual and behavioral economics / psych type people at the moment I think. Big qual need based on projects I see. Consulting track is ~50 hours weekly for the most part with some more or less heavy weeks...

I'm on the medtech side, so I can't speak much on pharma... And that's really because each office is rather siloed. Experiences can vary greatly based on the office you're interested in. What locations are you looking into?

Came from IQVIA but only had a limited tenure there

D1, We are very close with our teams. We become very informal if we are working on more than two projects lol. Which happens almost all the time if you are part of a client team or practice area. There are management level trainings and technical trainings. You can request for technical trainings from coursera or get certifications. If your manager approves, then you get reimbursed so may be get proactive approval from manager. Management trainings, there are too many of them. Every quarter, there is a month long special focus on trainings. So I will say it’s pretty good. My WLB is bad because I am trying to switch spaces so have to spend 60+ hours but that’s temporary for couple of months until I transition and it should go down to 50 hours afterwards. If you wanna talk more, ping me

I have social anxiety and I feel like I am being punished because of that. I am not being promoted and was told to work on confidence even though my technical performance was outstanding. I wished I can just "work on my confidence" and boom. But it's not gonna happen like that. Diversity has been the hot topic these days. Why do we view shy people, introverts, socially anxious people as less capable? Should I accept that PA is not for me or can I do something to contribute?
