Is 2080 billable hours a year standard for small firms. About 70k/year salary? Just wondering if this is strange

It depends on the type of law your firm practices. I know that certain insurance defense firms have higher billing requirements because they have billing arrangements with their clients to streamline costs. I believe the same may be true for worker’s comp in California. But if you are working doing standard work without any special arrangements, you are earning below market for that number of hours. How much below market will depend on your location and industry.

You're making 33 dollars an hour.....

Small firm making 70k and I bill 1000.

like

Go be a manager at your local In n Out, you'll make way more per hour...

I make about the same (plus bonus and raises) with billable goal under 700 per year at a small firm

like

Umm.. my billable requirement is 1900 and I make double your salary. And no pressure (at my level) to go beyond the required hours. Fell far short first year because of Covid and firm made no remarks other than to say that I have nothing to worry about and my hours were on par with others at my level for the year. So, I’d say you can do better for sure.

A8 - PM me if you’d like. Think they’re open to hiring full time remote as well.

Yooooo stop I made 110 billing 1800 😭

Ahhhh in the mainline in PA. If I told you, you’d find me in a second on LinkedIn. If you want a referral, PM me 😏 they asked me to send them someone who could *try* to fill my shoes (even though I did the least)

That’s an insane amount of hours for the pay!

like

I was at an insurance defense firm right after law school that paid $75k for 2160 hours a year (180 a month). Left before a year. That was miserable.

like

You are underpaid. I work for a small family law firm. My boss only requires 960 billable hours/year. I make $100k salary plus usually get a bonus at the end of the year.

Whaaaat? That’s a crazy low salary for a pretty steep hour requirement. Not normal.

like

As a follow up, my firm is hiring several cities if you want to PM me! Requirement is 2000 but salary would be much higher.

like

I made double that when I was a bartender

I’m a paralegal that makes $100k, with bonuses and OT (last year it was $25k). I have a 1500 requirement. I am not in a huge firm or in a big market. You deserve better. Life is short.

like

What kind of law do you practice and where? Is this another insurance defence statistic?

like

Do you know what your firm bills you at hourly ? That’s really how you determine if you’re getting played or not. A lot of the folks who are the same billables as you or less and are paid more likely have way higher rates. Understanding the business of law will help your more than soliciting compensation comparisons from people without context as to practice group and hourly rate.

like

It seems high, but it depends on how useful you are. I once had a firm offer me $80k for 2400 hours. Now I bill like 1600 and make $240k.

Individual Contributor or Manager of 4? I have about 6 yrs of exp and have managing a team of 4 for about a year. Recently in a performance review my manager commented that I was always a top tier bucket as an individual but as a manager, I was slightly worse off performance wise. I’ve been looking at another opp which is about 20% more comp but is an individual contributor. Is being a manager all it’s cracked up to be? Should I even consider since I’m early in my career?

I accepted an offer 4 months ago at a tech company. I asked for a very low salary at the time since I didn’t know the market in such a niche sector (VR) and now im getting new potential offers every week on LinkedIn that pay 30-90% more than my current salary. None of those offers are official yet but I’m thinking if I should still ask for a salary increase in my current job, since I feel used for asking a low salary at the time. I haven’t performed yet because of the company structure though

I have two job offers, one offers a salary of 61.5k and the other job offers an hourly rate of $27.65 with $41.48 for OT, as well as Sales Incentive Compensation Plan where the annual target incentive compensation is 42.86%. In other words, I could potentially receive quarterly bonuses that add up to around $24,650. However, that bonus isn’t guaranteed according to the offer letter and is contingent on my and my clients performance. Should I take the first job or second job?
