I think the market in North Dallas has slowed down a little. I bought in May, 3500 sq ft, 2019 build, in Carrollton, list price 560k I bought 590k. Here is another example in Frisco which is fairly new. It has been on market a month so can definitely get it at list price or below. https://www.redfin.com/TX/Frisco/3238-Angel-Dr-75034/home/102324977?utm_source=android_share&utm_medium=share&utm_nooverride=1&utm_content=link&2010988919=control With a decent down your mortgage will be 3500 a month or lower, hard to find comparable in NJ. Also, Dallas IS cheap, with the exception of housing post Covid. 15 months ago these same houses were selling 15% lower. Now they seem pricey for those of us who have lived here a long time. But this is a recent phenomenon.

This post makes me wonder if I even belong in a career field in consulting. I am transitioning out of a 20year enlisted military career so the possibility of achieving these numbers in career and housing are extremely foreign to me. More power to anyone who can achieve those numbers but here I am aiming for 100k as I transition and my target number alone is more money than I’ve ever made within the military. Granted my purpose for serving wasn’t to make money but now I would like to experience that. I am considering going into management consulting under human capital which I saw Deloitte had openings but I have yet to target any specific organizations. Is anyone willing to share some advice for 20 year transitioning veterans? I am coming to the table with my military experience, bachelors degree and masters degree (non mba) so I welcome any feedback that will help shape veterans path.

I would be happy to chat. Feel free to DM me.

I would take the NJ offer. To have a good lifestyle in Dallas nowadays household income needs to be 300k if you have 2 kids. Houses are around 800k-1 million for decent sized properties. You can always stay in philly or Princeton and potentially give that much for housing as well but enjoy a higher base salary. I am from Dallas and I love it here but I moved here 10 years back when it was a lot more affordable.

Newer houses? Have you ever been to NJ? LOL

It definitely is a more comfortable lifestyle here, though it’s a little closer if you’re talking about South Jersey closer to Philly which is quite a bit cheaper than the parts closer to NYC, all of which are considerably more expensive than most parts of DFW. On average, property taxes are higher in NJ (both in % and actual dollars) plus you’ll pay over $1k/mo in income taxes to the state of NJ. The pros of NJ are you’re within a 2 hour drive of just about anything you want (NYC, Philly, beach, mountains), which is not the case in DFW. While houses are often bigger here, lots in general aren’t as big here as many towns in NJ so you may have a somewhat smaller yard.

Thanks! Yeah I’ve lived in jersey/nyc area my whole life. The role is based in NYC but I live in North Jersey, so much more expensive than south Jerz/Philly. Think the 210 in Dallas is ballpark closeish to the $300 in north jerz with a much better lifestyle and newer real estate

That’s a substantial difference, personally I would take the $300k. Also, if you’re looking at houses that are listed at $650-700k, be prepared to offer at least $50-$100k over asking and even that does not guarantee that you’ll get it since cash offers are plenty right now

Also random question - are driveways not a thing in Dallas? I’ve seen tons of neighborhoods where nobody has a driveway and the lawns just merge into one another’s property. Where do people park? On the street?

like

That is true, that’s why I said usually, rear alley is primarily the builders mechanism of increasing lots per acre. I am/was a realtor for almost a decade and I’ve never had a client prefer rear entry alley garage vs in the front from a aesthetic standpoint, however I’m sure there’s some folks out there that prefer no driveway in the front

Probably would go with the NJ offer if companies and teams are comparable.

Interviewed for Uber Strategy Manager- what a massive joke. Wouldn't tell me the comp on the first interview. Case studies are 3x the size of any other case study I've done for actual fortune 100 companies. And then interview with everyone and their mother, all who wax eloquent about my solutions. But then the last person gives me another case study to do. Towards the end, everyone and HR is giving me a verbal offer, telling me they're excited about me joining their team, I should join asap.

My personal opinion used to be never put my hands on a woman unless my child or family is in danger or if she had a weapon But now Idk anymore

I hate having to ask this question but I know a stigma exists around it: is it okay to look for/start a new job while trying to plan for a new child? If I start at my new job now, I will definitely be leaving for maternity leave before my first year is over. Perhaps this has been asked before but I’m new here and looking for some advice.

Career question. Currently a big4 financial tax manager doing mostly fed compliance. I do not wish to become a partner as selling business is not my thing. I've been entertaining two exit options. Exit now as more of a general accounting role hoping to be a controller one day vs wait couple more years and exit at SM/director level hoping to be a head of tax or tax director somewhere. The end goal for me is to make as much as possible and be able to retire from corporate grinds.

Is it bad to have basic salary less compared to flexible pay. If the basic is 30% of gross, it's a government rule to have basic as 40 - 50% of gross which the company is not following and not ready to change the structure. I heard the advantage as in hand salary will be more in that case. But what are the disadvantages of this.
