Is 50% commission a good “salary”? Just received an offer with the following details:

- 50% commission. Stepwise increase by 5% for every $5k per month (e.g., 50% of first $5k, 55% of next $5k, etc) (Resets every month)
- treated as independent contractor
- no health insurance, no 401k
- no hour requirement, WFH option, flexible hours
- they cover bar dues, CLEs

I feel like 50% is very high. Obviously being an independent contractor costs me a bit more, but does this look like a decent deal?

I've battled with depression and anxiety for the last decade because I got married and started a family too young. I’m a second year associate at a small, but reputable firm. My caseload is almost entirely made up of clients who were referred to one of the partners but the partners are too busy so I end up taking the case. The clients are told up front that an associate, rather than a partner will be taking his/her case. I’ve run into an issue a couple of times where the client doubts my advice because I am only 2 years in. Has anyone else experienced this? How do I address the fact that I’m only 2 years in?

Someone please tell me if I am crazy. I am at a family law firm with approximately 25 attorneys. I previously worked at small shops where I essentially handled everything myself with no support staff. Now at my current firm I have a paralegal who really only makes my job more difficult… am I crazy to say that I don’t need a paralegal as I am comfortable operating as a solo and pay me slightly. I’m already pretty much operating on my own anyway. Feel like it’s a win win.

Is it important to offer support staff that speak a foreign language or is it sufficient if the attorney can communicate with the client? We had one bilingual paralegal and another who is not. The bilingual one left us some time ago.

Thus, we are left with one who can’t communicate with about 25% of our clients. And there just isn’t enough revenue to support two paralegals despite my partner pushing us to hire.

Hi, wondering what gifts, if any, you have received from clients after completing their divorces. I am a big law attorney currently getting divorced in a messy proceeding, and once it’s over (god willing in this lifetime) I’d like to give my attorney and the paralegal who worked on my case a gift.
