Time to pitch a tent on the street. Just make sure you can work from your tent’s WiFi or else a squatter may snag your spot.
You can do it, and have fun too
$78k in SF vs $63k in Chicago. That’s a big oof, Chief
FA1 does have a point these are probably extremely averaged out so won’t be 1:1 accuracy. BUT I would assume it’s in the rough ballpark. I mean I moved between two cities and compared against this app and it felt fairly similar. But dual income, no kids- you should be able to manage
Hate to say this, but living in SF with pay under $100k will be pretty difficult. It’s doable but you’ll have to stay in more than your friends, constantly search for cheaper restaurants, etc. Having any meaningful savings will be incredibly hard. Definitely not comparable to $63k in Chicago.
I make twice what you make and I feel poor in SF. It’s not so much that I’m actually poor, more so that everyone in SF is rich by comparison.
Also, to note, I’ve weighed out the cost of living (from SF compared to Chicago), and I plan on investing 65% of my income, and still not going to be spending over my income
Coach
You plan to invest $50,700 of your $78,000 income? And proceed to live on $27,300 including paying your rent? Is that 78k take home or gross as after takes those figures would be even less.
Filing single in CA you’d take home what $60k then save 65% of that, being $39k, and live on just $21k
Can you share an example of the apartment you plan to rent because SF is expensive and I’m impressed at your money management if you make this work!
I think I’m rambling because I’m in awe if you make this work!
I should add that this isn’t even factoring in any healthcare or pension costs.
SF has a lot of free things to do. Split rent would def work!
What would mostly drive up ur expense is probably food. There are sooooooo many restaurants here and lots of activities do involves getting food/drinks.
Let me update you on the numbers. I will make $4000 month, I calculated my future spending based on what I spend now plus the average increase of food, groceries, taxes, etc (according to a statistic website I found comparing city expenses). My rent at the apartment I’m looking at will be $833 (after splitting w my partner) WITHOUT taxes and utilities. At the end of that, I’ll invest about $2,200 a month (I plan to have my college tuition paid off by then).
Noooow it makes sense
It's enough if you can split the rent.
Maybe if you split a 200sq ft 4 ways with 2 local hobos 🤣
There is so much to do / going on in SF, I’m sure you’ll have a great time.
I grew up there VC1. And I can’t lie, I understand why my parents and older people love it. It’s great for when you start winding things down in life, and you need someplace cheap, slow pace, and car-friendly.
I just rag on it because it will always have a place in my heart.
where in sf will you be living?
Oakland has some extremely sketchy areas so just be aware and do your research.
1600-1800 in SF is throwing some red flags to me too
