If you think it’s a good jump, then it’s a good jump
I’d say so. Anything less than 30% is not worth it as far as I’ve been told so 36% is great. I’d ask for 40% while you’re at it if you haven’t counter already.
Why would “anything less than 30%” not be worth it? 20% has always been my threshold. Usually it’s been higher than that, but if the offer isn’t at least 20%, then talks are dead.
Was out for drinks with a partner on Saturday and we was telling me why he didn’t take another firms offer at 70%. He was very pragmatic that the firm another B4 had same capabilities and culture strengths and weaknesses however the reason was the sustainability of an offer for that. With value jumps like that; what are the stated and perceived expectations? What level of care do they have for when there is a rough patch?
A jump of 36% sounds fair and sustainable but a point you should keep in mind as you seek higher jumps.
Also I encourage you to reflect on who are and how strong are your relationships with the following:
(1) Sponsor(s)
(2) Mentor(s)
(3) Jungle Guide
(4) Battle Buddy
Each jump will require identifying, establishing trust and growing the relationship for each
Battle Buddy = Peer level trusted person, sometimes people refer to as a work bestie but in general battle buddies look out for you from a work lens and a personal lens; you share a similar sense of mission while also sharing accountability to each other
Jungle Guides = I first heard the term from Liars Poker then had a couple of ex colonel bosses use the term early in my consulting career. Unlike mentors who’s relationships can have any length of time and are more tactical with varying differences in seniority than your own - jungle guides are more senior than you but no so much that they are a sponsor with the primary role of helping you navigate the environment of that firm, your function/industry and more broadly consulting as a whole
What’s comp?
36% in base or total comp?
What’s the expected YOY raise and bonus looking like?
Take it.
Rising Star
Of course not. Never leave unless the next job offers a 360% raise at the minimum.
Can be - what’s the move though? Into desired function? Better firm, etc?
Nope - If you have the offer that is your proof that 1 year was enough time. Id accept it - unless you think it’s a low offer
Rising Star
Yes
