Yes it is as the 401 K accounts charge a fee. Since it is company sponsored, you are genetic the account without a fee.
Max until employee match. Then go Roth IRA. If you are close to a lower tax bracket you may want to consider taking more traditional 401k out to get the lower tax percentage
If no match, then skip the 401k and put money in your Roth IRA. You'll likely have better investment options.

Small boutique. The pay is good but I miss my employer match for sure.
To those recommending skipping 401k keep in mind that Max Ira contribution allowed w/o penalties is $5,500 not enough for retirement. Worth using 401k as you can contribute pre-tax and you only pay taxes on withdrawals (no annual tax payments on dividends or realized gains)
401k is great for reducing taxable income. I do that and Roth, but if forced to choose I'll take tax savings now vs promises of savings later.
