Is a Big 4 role really that respected on a resume? I know everyone says it but I’m curious if that’s a recruiting technique or if B4 is actually impressive

It depends, in audit or tax a lot more, because they are the leaders in that industry. In advisory/consulting it carries a bit less weight since they aren’t the market leaders. Don’t get me wrong, it’s tough to break into advisory/consulting at the big 4 but you’d be competing against mbb\t2 consulting firms, which is a whole different animal.

I entered TD as an M1 then EYP as an M3. I’m an M4 now and will promoted next year to Sr.Mgr. Yea don’t worry about level. Network. Know everyone.

If it’s consulting, no. Many good firms know that if you’ve been a consultant at big 4 for less than 10ish years, then you don’t really have any in-depth knowledge on anything.

In addition, he has worked for multiple clients on their most difficult accounting, SEC reporting, and filing challenges. Saying Pwc2 would have more industry knowledge by working directly for the client is just false.

IMO it used to be a lot more respected than it is now.

I would say yes. Most would prefer someone with Big 4 experience vs someone without in an accounting role. When you have been in Big 4 for so many years, people who are hiring usually know that you are capable of certain things at a minimum.

It all depends on where you want to end up. If you want to eventually work at Fortune 500 companies in accounting than big 4 is extremely important. If you are more looking to land with smaller companies (by small I mean <1 billion in revenue per year) then there are other ways to get there. I elected not to go work for big 4 and go to work in the advisory department at a regional firm. I decided that I wanted to work with clients from $30 mil in annual revenue to $500 mil in annual revenue. 1 year after I finished my masters degree and started working for the firm one of my clients offered me a 120K and the chance to replace them as CFO in 4-6 years. I elected to pass on this offer because of how much I was still learning in PA. I also have a good work life balance due to the my flexiblity at the smaller firm. In summary: Determine where you want to end up. List the skills you need to get there. Look for the best path for you to get the skills you need and once you find it go for it! Good luck!

A goal of mine is to leave my PA firm (one of the big 4) this year. Currently in my fourth busy season. Do you think I should wait until getting promoted to senior and leave right after, or leave after this spring busy season? I am not super eager to get a senior position because with Covid and the inevitable learning curve, I don’t feel equipped to accept one. So I was thinking of applying for entry positions. Any advice?

I’m currently interview and I’m nervous about going to a new job that is hybrid or remote at the moment. A big reason I was successful in my current position was by earning people respect through having a good attitude, doing whatever work was asked of me, and showing that I genuinely care/want to learn. I feel like without being in person it will be much harder to develop these personal relationships with coworkers and earn their trust. Am I overthinking this?
