Is a career coach ever worth it?

like

It depends. If you find one with a good network it could change your life. Try to get referrals from people who you trust.

This seems to be the greatest advantage of working with a coach -- access to their network. Other than that, it would need to be someone you vibe with and who really encourages and inspires you to keep taking the next right steps for you personally!

The hard part is finding one that is worth the $$$, but if you do, definitely worth it.

career coaches can be helpful in two ways, first to help you define your path and passion and second help thing you don’t understand blind spots and weaknesses that may need to be addressed. Kearney will often engage a career coach if a person is at the principal level doing very well in most aspects what has a gap that may keep them from getting to partner. The goal is to help this individual understand those Blindspot address them and be a creative as a partner in the Firm. Overall never a bad idea to invest in yourself suggest you be clear on what you want to achieve and find the right coach you can help you get there.

For context I’ve been a partner for over 15 years and in retrospect wish I had invested to smooth out some rough spots that potentially would’ve allowed me to be more successful sooner. Good luck

A large part of depends on how well you implement feedback. If you’re committed to doing what you’re advise then it can be a game changer for you.

I have been a partner a long time and have never seen having an external career coach playing a part in anyone making partner .

The coaching you need and the network you need are all internal to the firm - so finding a coach amongst existing partners is usually the way to go .

All that said - the value of an external coach is not in opening their network to you because of a paid relationship . The value is in helping you think through what you need to do to attain a goal . That's largely about your ability to act on their coaching . If you have that ability - why spend money on an external coach when you have so many partners available internal to the firm who can do the same for you

True and agree - but as an associate , neither the person nor the partners will know for sure if they will go all the way . At that level , it's more realistic to have an SM as the mentor for more consistent coaching

This made me think about my own career . I don't think anyone even knew I existed till I was an M . From that point, the account leader noticed me in a workshop and took me under his wings . But it was only when I made SM that both he and I figured I might have a shot at P

Yes, if they are great. A lot are ok to good but for the time investment (and cost) it has to be worthwhile given the opportunity cost of time.

Hello All,

Need your suggestions on choosing the right org for career growth. I have 3yrs of exp and have been offered from Harman, SunLife & Axtria Ingenious Insights. Pay and tech wise Axtria offering better than other two. It will be really helpful if you share your thoughts on the same.

Is it a red flag as a candidate to ask if a company offers maternity leave? I was recently laid off, so I wasn't expecting to lose my job. We're planning on trying for a baby in the next year or so, so it's really important to me that my next job offers paid maternity leave.

The issue is that it's so rarely advertised on company web sites, but ultimately better maternity leave would sway my decision for a job. Is there a way to ask this tactfully? Or without raising red flags?
