Is a commercial contracts role a dead-end job for your career?

In house? Is this a real question? Commercial counsel has a lot of potential to grow.

like

Only thing that’s a dead end is your mindset. BOOM. Go forward my friend.

likefunny

I think it depends on what you want out of your career. I review commercial contracts and am content being a worker bee. My clients come to me via legal services providers so I have control over who/when/what and how much but there's no advancement or big payday from it or climbing of any corporate ladders. I'm fine with this because I value work life balance and this set up allows me the most latitude. Just my 2c.

like

If you will be reviewing the same types of contracts over and over and that is your primary responsibility, yes I do think that can be somewhat of a dead end. Of course there are exceptions, but if maximizing the opportunity for growth is important to you it might not be the best route.

like

I don’t think that’s necessarily the case. I support our business development teams on the revenue generating side of the business and it’s a high profile role because we negotiate and close deals that make profit for the company. Even if you aren’t supporting the revenue side of the business and are reviewing standard HR contracts or inbound license agreements, you’re still getting broad exposure to many facets of your company’s business as inhouse counsel that can be valuable for other roles. So no, I don’t think it is a “dead-end job for your career”.

like

Do you just mean random commercial contracts (like a high street firm) or transactional work? If former potentially yes.

Yes, the former.

As a lawyer or as an in-house counsel?

As in-house counsel, you’ll get a ton of exposure and experience across the entire business and legal gamut, even if your position is “just” a commercial contracts role. It’ll only be as dead-end as you want to make it.

In the recruiter interview I wasn’t asked where I live. The job is with a huge sports wear company in Los Ángeles and I live in Miami. Does not living in the same city not make the hiring manger want to hire you even though I would move to the jobs location ASAP? And if they ask where I live do I say I live in their city? Even though I don’t and it’s a contract position.

I plan on leaving my current company but have equity vesting end of February. Was going to give a longer notice and stay until award vestdate. I got advice that I should give notice once that equity vests. If I give 2 week notice, that would mean I am at current co until mid March. I work in house now, does anyone have experience seeing company deny an award. don’t want to stay here until mid-March because other company start date. I know my company will be screwed if I just leave.

I just received an offer for a job I am very excited about. Base is within reasonable range and I will likely go back and ask for a bit more there. The company also offers a yearly cash bonus based on the performance of the company as well as a stock grant. Those are determined based on percentages of base salary. My question is: are those percentages typically negotiated or set based on position?

Been in house for about a year. I just found out that a new hire who has 1-2 less years of experience than me (but will have the same role/title as me) received a compensation package significantly higher than me, mostly due to the market dynamics with law firm associates’ compensation being ratcheted up the past year. Can I ask for an equitable raise mid year? And if so, how? I got rave reviews but an immaterial pay bump (3%) at year end in December.
