Is a good work/life balance possible in FDD? Sitting on an offer to transfer into FDD from audit. Found the work in FDD more interesting than audit during a rotation I did last year, but I really don’t want to sign-up to work significantly more than I already do in audit. Oh what to do!

Is this HR trying to dissuade defectors?

Absolutely not

Do it. It’s way more interesting. And you work as long as you have to - you don’t just sit in an audit room until 11 PM for weeks. You can take vacations any time of year - and when you aren’t staffed on a deal, there’s nothing to do - no planning, no archive checklists or whatever it is audit does now. Work/life balance is whatever you make of it. You work a lot, but you didn’t come to the big 4 to work 9-5.

like

You’ll work a lot just maybe not in the same designated period as audit busy season. Work is more interesting though and you learn some good skill sets

like

Maybe you’re thinking of CMAAS which is technical accounting so yeah that’s very GAAP heavy. In FDD you learn financial statement analysis like QOE and adjusted NWC. You also learn a bit about the deal process and transaction purchase price. In general you build up strong excel skills and report writing skills.

Pick something else.

FDD isn’t a good gateway to IB lmao

These past few months have been crazy but in general over the last 4+ years, I’ve found there was way more flexibility than in audit. Like yes you may have to work a random weekend here or there, but you can also leave show up at 10am and leave at 2pm if it’s slow and the partners will support it. Also, getting to take vacation in the winter is a huge perk since no busy season. Summer months tend to be slow as PE clients are taking vacation then too.

Just circling back - love how this was 26 weeks ago and it’s still going just as strong with no end in sight.

I felt it’s either super busy or super not busy....it’s hard to predict your schedule even a week before....anything can happen to a deal.

like

I've found the work/life balance to be better than audit. Also, I'm excited to not have this upcoming winter be filled with the typical audit busy season.

like

WLB is terrible. Take it from me, NYC FDD...but honestly compared to what I hear from audit friends it's better. For example, as long as you aren't on a deal, we are encouraged to take a chunk of vacation. I'm going to be out for 3 weeks soon.

like

Work life will be worse especially in this wfh environment. They expect you to be available at all times.

like

Yeah this is a hard phase. But honestly... everything about life is a dumpster fire so I don’t think I can say that it’s work that’s making it awful. It would be different if we were getting crushed with deals but could still go out for celebratory beers after signing. I know there’s less balance, but I also find that I’ve gained back almost 2 hours of total commute time in a day, and that’s significant to offset some of the workload.

OP - I’m having an interview for the rotation soon. Would you mind sharing what it was like or any tips to prepare for it?
