Yeah but if you factor in your son’s probability of actually being accepted, then your expected tuition costs are only like $6k

You make yoke, yes?

Very few people are actually paying sticker price at these colleges. It's worth applying to that amongst a number of schools and seeing what you get in the way of scholarship money. You can also opt to pay a portion and if your son wants to go he can take out loans to cover the rest.

like

What’s the alternative option? Very different answers if your alternative is Berkeley EECS with in-state tuition or a random slightly cheaper private school

like

If those are your alternatives and you kid actually gets into Columbia, then it is absolutely worth every nickel it will cost you.

Look at Colin Powell. Went to a tier two public university and didn’t even do that well that but ended up very successful. I wouldn’t take any suggestion to burden your child with loans. Go to a top state school. The best thing I did for my kids was to leave them debt free with masters degrees. They are ahead of their peers because of that.

I'm here for the shout out to Colin Powell. Rest in peace, brother.

Try reframing the cost in terms of increased future earnings potential needed to justify the cost. I.e. if Columbia is an additional 30k per year over his next highest choice, determine what increase to earnings are needed in the ~10 years post graduation to justify the extra $120k cost in education - then weigh that against the cost of financing the education. That’s the analytical approach. As a quick answer, from friends I’ve seen go through the comp sci interviewing processes, school name on the diploma matters far less than performance during coding tests, which would suggest that any quality program would position you well for those jobs

Not for undergrad

like

Yeah agreed, sets you off on a different trajectory

Depends on what your son wants to do. MBB and banking, then yea, those are the kind of schools you need to go to since they're recruiting targets.

Yes it’s worth it. See if he can even get in, and worry about the price later

like

What state are you based out of?

It’s probably worth it but if you’re unsure there’s also some fairly competitive state schools that might be cheaper that you can look into. I went to a big10 engineering school and my cs friends had plenty of options coming out of undergrad

My understanding was that all universities were ballpark the same price, and that what separated them was how challenging it is to get in. Is that way off?

I never said I was looking to save money. Was expressing my lack of familiarity with the delta in university fees in the US.

The sticker price is one thing and how much you pay is another. Financial aid at top schools is often very good with %50+ receiving at least some help.

I'm switching jobs and considering whether I want to roll over my 401(k). I have about $220k in my plan. Considering rolling it into an existing Fidelity IRA with a balance of about $50k. Since October of 2020, I've paid about $880 in "plan administrative fees" to my 401(k) provider as well as the fund expense ratios. It looks like Fidelity does not charge administrative fees on IRA accounts, so that seems to make it a no brainer, plus the investment options are much broader. What am I missing?
