Is accounting considered a middle class or upper middle class job?

These responses are wild. Audit starting salaries in most parts of the country are well above the median. If you continue to move up/switch to another LOS or industry it’s easily upper middle

likesmartfunny

I also agree on upper middle. At an experienced level you can make a lot of money especially in industry. At the CAO or Partner levels you can make millions so its a fairly large range.

like

Upper class. CPA holds as much prestige as a lawyer or doctor.

Living in the Bay Area I feel like it’s a lower middle class job 😭

likefunny

Definitely lower class in Bay Area, a 24 year old UC B non-engineer kid makes more than a 4 year experience senior. And they only work less than 6 hours per day, we are double their hours.

Accountants are the blue collar workers of the finance world.

C1, you clearly don’t understand analogies.

It's all about perspective. After 20 years as a NYC teacher my single mom retired at 87,000. We felt very middle class because we went on trips and always had a roof and food on our plates, while those around us were on section 8 and struggling. At about three years I'm at about 120k in compensation in tax and with my wife's income we have about 240k in total comp. We have a house, two cars, retirement maxed and go on trips. I feel we are high middle class. Do we have a mansion, or luxury cars or fly first class? No we don't. But I think accounting gives you the lifestyle that if your conservative and don't live above your mean you will be more then we'll off.

Pwc3 I can only speak from NYC perspective. A brand new teacher with a bachelor starts out at about 58k, with a masters about 70k. I think with no kids this is a good starting point. You can also add after school and summer school for extra pay for an extra 5k per year. Also consider all of the fringe benefits as well. I think this can be considered middle class as still. Also you can make much more at a charter school making more than 100k as well. Heck, on Long Island where I live teachers can make 150k easy. Now if we are talking middle america where the education system are almost all ranked at the bottom I agree that teachers are not middle class. But I would argue most jobs don't pay as well in those states.

I'd submit that being a partner is probably upper.

I think we’re saying the same thing, social media is giving you the top outcomes, which distorts our perception of the relationship between work and money. For instance, Mr. Beast is hugely successful and makes money off YouTube but you don’t see the ten plus years of work he put in, but you also don’t see the other thousands of people that also have been on YouTube for years and haven’t made anything. As a viewer, seeing examples like Mr. Beast hundreds of times, you start to get mad about a very reasonable accounting salary at a job because a guy or gal your same age are making millions on YouTube. (The good looking example is just pointing out that social media can make you insecure about anything you want it to; from salary to looks)

You all have ZERO understanding of what life is like in the real world. To come here and cry lower middle class status is so offensive to those really there let alone those in poverty.

Same EY13 and RSM 1

We’re sort of like the Eevees of the professional services world. Strong foundation; easily transferable skillset that can be parlayed or evolve into most anything. You can stay as generalist or specialized as you’d like to be.

With accounting there are plenty of opportunities/paths to make it big, and in the grand scheme of things, you can’t really “screw it up”. With that background there’s always going to be *someone * to pay you (more than most households) to do *something *.

Plain Eevee is staying in audit until partner, resisting change to something else. Also unpopular and not done by many people, at least from my Gen 1 days 🤔

Just so I'm clear, are there 2 or 3 levels to each class? People talk about upper middle class,so there must be a lower middle class. Is there a middle middle class? Then of course if all that holds true for middle class then there must also be lower lower class, middle lower class, upper lower class, lower upper class, middle upper class, and upper upper class. Right?

And literally 95% of Americans claim to be middle class!

I think it’s a lower middle class job. My cousin and I both went to UCLA and he did computer science and now makes $180k year (including stocks and bonus) and I make barely $66k even after picking the company that offered me the highest salary and a year of experience

D8: please just stop making up numbers. Millions?? ROFL

It is absolutely an upper middle class job in HCOL, sure maybe you don’t make good money at 24 being an A2 but once you are into your career you can either be making well over $150k in HCOL either in industry or public

The people I know in their early-mid 30s in accounting have homes in expensive parts of NJ and CT and live upper middle class lifestyles

All of us accountants have imposter syndrome. We don’t think we are as capable as our finance brethren. At a minimum a CPA is middle class with a pathway to upper middle class.

I am MCOL city based and bring in more than my family medicine doctor spouse - with a significantly less education debt ($0 vs $300k).

Low class

In Canada it’s considered an upper middle class job, because some of the top business students are still going for this career as opposed to banking or tech. There isn’t a 150 credit hour requirement in Canada to be eligible for the CPA, so less red tape.

Any career in which it's normal to make 100k+ with 5/6 years of experience is upper middle class.

Big 4/ big public firm accounting jobs are definitely upper middle class.

A bookkeeper for a small mom and pop shop is technically an “accounting” job but that’s a lot different

I have received an offer in TCS accepted it and submitted the documents for BGC . The CTC i mentioned is 13L in iBegin portal and uploaded the same recent hike letter. But my current company held my offer of 13L and salary/payslip is with old offer and i have submitted documents with new offer letter which is 13L.
I am little concerned it might impact negative on my BGC..

Does they verify hike letter too ?

I’ve been in house for a year and feel like I’m working similar hours as private practice but without the benefit of a bonus that reflects my hours. I also feel like I’m not getting as good of training in house as I was in a firm. For reference I’m a 4th year.

I recently had an in-house interview for a large company where the screening interviewer communicated the salary range and told me that I had to let him know on the spot if the range was not high enough. The amount was lower than I initially expected based on my research into the role and company so I was a little surprised. What is the best response to this question bearing in mind that I would like to make it to the next round while negotiating a higher salary?

Hey folks. 3 YOE, working in tech at a great company, and making 135K TC in Austin.

Have an admit at Columbia and received 30K in aid each year, so I anticipate paying 110K in tuition. With cost of living in upper Manhattan, estimating an additional 35K each year, so 180K total cost.

I want to stay in tech post MBA, but explore faang companies and product roles. Is this worth the cost? I figure I could make a jump in comp at least?

Anyone have any recruiters they recommend?

Looking to move from London after spending a year here (brexit sucks so leaving). Spent five years with EY down under in IT advisory. 7.5 YOE overall.

Moving on from Hotels (Hospitality)?

I’ve been thinking about this for awhile now, but it is very to commit to actually accept a new job offer since I really do love my job. My only complaint is, the pay vs workload is very small. I’m a manager now and my property offered me a director position… but the salary is still low! To make six figures, it’ll take another 5-6 years to grind it out.

Should I move on and go to a different industry? Opinions are welcome! Thanks in advance.
