Is an In plan Roth rollover the same as a mega back door conversion? I have like $20k in after tax contributions in my 401k; I’m wanting to put this in a vehicle where I avoid capital gains in the future (like a Roth IRA which I already do)

Yup! That’s the megabackdoor.
Usually can only move it to an IRA when you leave an employer, but it depends on the plan.
I have some funds tied up in a Roth 401k (via megabackdoor) that I can’t move after leaving a previous employer because I would need to get rid of the full 401k plan.

Yep. Accenture allows this while employed - YMMV. There’s also a federal max and one set by the company, FYI. Ours is $15k I believe

Correct

Thank you!
So after conversion, is this now in a Roth 401k account?

ACN1 - it doesn’t become a Roth IRA automatically. Depends on the company.
Mine is a Roth 401k and has been for the last 2 companies I worked at.

Is there any downside to doing this? Like would it effect my ability for traditional to Roth IRA back door conversions of $6k per year?

It seems like a no brainer, but wondering if some tax implications that I’m missing

No meaningful downside. If you have specific employer restrictions you may end up eventually once you leave needing to choose between either keep it in a Roth 401k, or rolling over a full 401k to IRAs which limits your normal backdoor use (via IRA). But still absolutely worth it.

My company plan is with t Rowe price. I have been doing $6k a year in back door Roth through my Ira with fidelity.

Should I roll this into the Roth IRA I already have with fideity?
Or is best to keep my rollover with the same firm and/or separate these rollovers from my other back door ira?

My clients are pushing back on it this year, and I can't say I blame them. If I were in their shoes, I'd rather take the risk of not filing than the expense of filing again. Mega Backdoor Roth IRA question/After-Tax contributions

Crosspost from a thread in the KPMG bowl discussing Mega Backdoor Roth IRA/After-Tax contributions. I wanted to ask a quick question for a “mistake” I may have made.

I forgot to change my contributions from after-tax to Roth + Traditional. A few paychecks went through as after-tax and hasn’t touched my $20,500 contribution limit for the year yet.

How will those funds be used/taxed? What are the implications here.

Considering where real estate is, I'm trying to decide what to do...

I bought a townhouse at the bottom of the market in 2011 for 230k. Still owe about 150k, and currently worth about 500-530k.

I moved out last August after getting married but I didn't sell since I knew I could, and am, renting for about $800/month more than it costs me all in.

I believe I have another year to decide if I want to sell and make use of primary residence exclusion from cap gains on sale.

Do I sell or hold?

Term life insurance question - I added the AICPA annual term policy last year. I've noticed personal finance media seems to push 10-20 year term and not discuss annual.

It was considerable cheaper up front and more at the end than 10yr per the fee schedule. If all goes according to plan I'll be at or close to FI within 5-7 years so not sure that I'd keep the full amount past then and would miss the benefit of the cheaper years at the end. Am I missing other risks of not doing 10+ term?

I’m 26.
•$150k in 401k/IRA
•$220k in real estate (excl. primary)
•$88k in cash/brokerage
• the rest in HSA/primary home/other.

To calculate FIRE, am I only looking at the $88k that I can access readily? Real estate is cash flowing, but not sure how/if to factor in the equity.
