Is an MBA really worth it for a career pivot?

IMO only if your pivot goals are investment banking, hedges funds, PE (some prior experience in M&A required so your miles may vary) or MBB. Otherwise why waste the money?

This is exactly right

Honestly most of my friends have gone to business school and gotten great jobs (bcg, etc), but it seemed too expensive and time consuming for me. I did a bootcamp which was a FRACTION of the cost and time, made a career pivot and got a job at a FAANG and my salary is on par if not slightly higher when factoring TC. It just depends on what kind of learner you are I suppose and what you want to do. Agree that unless you want to go into a big finance firm its not 100% necessary.

Completely depends on what you want to do. It may help in corporate America, but again, it depends on the company. You should identify your principal motivators - the things that help you get up and eagerly go to work. Once you ID them, then ask: do I want to go $50-$150k in debt? Will it help me achieve what I want?

FYI: I have a MBA and not one person has ever asked me about it. Of course, I work for myself as a consultant and coach. It makes my resume look good, but that only matters until they meet you and hear you.

You don’t have to do an MBA for that. There are many other ways to learn, esp with mentors. Besides an education, I think the main benefit of the degree is the networking. Of course that REALLY depends on 1) getting into a n executive MBA and 2) the class members are actually interesting/important. The latter element is basically a gamble.

like

+1 to the yes pile.

Caveat being it really ought to be a top 20 MBA. I actually learned a lot; I think my MBA had some really great classes but honestly placement, brand, and network is a large % of what you're buying.

like

I second this…however hesitate on the top 20, my school was ranked top 20 but I really think it comes down to the alumni network strength. Look at how strong that is and go from there.

Also, Find out what companies recruit from that school, what companies have info sessions there, etc

For me, yes. But I knew I would never get a job in consulting without getting an MBA, I knew before starting MBA that's what I wanted to do, my pre-MBA salary was very low, and I got a big s scholarship that convered 90% of tuition from a top 20 school. For me, it was unquestionably a good move.

It helped unlock a career I wouldn't otherwise have access to and my socioeconomic status has shot up higher than I thought possible coming from my background, which I now realize was fairly poor.

But, if you're not sure what you want to do or whether an MBA will help you do that or not, you can't go to a "good" program, you're already doing well financially, or have to pay full price, those are all things where I would say hit "pause" before you jump into an MBA and figure some more stuff out first.

I can't be sure, but I had a very high GMAT so I have to think that was probably the main reason

I was fortunate enough to have an employer pay for mine while working full time. Otherwise, I don't know if its worth going into debt. I will say I gained valuable skills since I was full time employed and able to apply learnings and excel templates in real time.

Do I still have a chance to get the offer letter. Anybody was in similar situation and got the offer letter later.

Thanks

I've been in consulting for ~8 months post-MBA and I hate it. I don't care about the work I'm doing and feel like I have minimal impact, but I work literally all day from the time I wake up until I go to bed. I want to leave and move to industry, ideally an earlier stage startup, but if I left now I'd owe a lot of money back to my current employer for tuition reimbursement. Don't know what to do. I feel incredibly stuck, and every day I feel like more of my soul is being sucked away from me 🙃

If impossible, what are notable Google exit opps? Also have a passion for public policy/government. If it's a longer convo would love to DM anyone who I can speak with.

Hey all, having issues with interviewing this year. I’ve been passed over every opportunity I really want and I’m unsure how to regroup and move forward. A lot of my HPLC and LCMS experience is with already established methods. Any tips?

I recently started my MBA though I'm still having trouble landing interviews and think I should be applying for different roles than I have been. I've been working in cosmetics mainly on the customer service side, currently senior support for the CS team and have experience doing CS on social media.

Hello fishes,
I am a data scientist and I have an offer from Mindtree of 30 LPA (fixed) and another offer from EXL Service of 31 LPA (fixed) + 10% variable.
Can you please help me to decide which on to go with?

I’m brand new to an agency and a smaller account and after about a month here I’m realizing I need more work.

I don’t want to seem like a know it all because I do have a lot left to learn but does it feel appropriate to ask for more work/another small account, etc. or should I give it more time as I’m still adjusting…
