Is an MBA required for exits to director level corporate strategy positions? Does this vary by industry?

Looks like so many tax compliance folks are trying to get into International Tax, M&A tax, Accounting Advisory, or Tax Technology. Are these areas really more prestigious and more fun, or the trend will be gone in a few years? Thoughts?
