Is anyone doing anything for their staff on Administrative Assistant’s Day (4/27/22). I need ideas and my MP wants them BIG.

LOL we do a firm wide “thing” for ALL STAFF and each attorney does their own “thing” for their assigned assistants. Back when I was an assistant I used to get $100-$500 gift cards (increased with time) or a check with a thank you card. The firm in the past two years due to COVID has not done a big thing because we’ve been remote. We’re back so now we’re looking to kick thing back up. So far I have an outing to top golf on a party bus, a day cruise with lunch (we’re in Miami), and a possible spa half day with lunch. I need a few more. My managing partner is wanting to go all out this year lol

We’re a small firm, 13 of us, but it was a nice weekend trip. We had a group discount and significant other/plus 1 came along. It was unique and everyone loved it

Right now all I have for an idea is gift cards to a coffee place I know my secretary likes (which I also did for Christmas). She just got a new motorcycle so maybe something related to that.

Maybe we can all use this as a chance to get to know our secretaries and see what they’re into

I usually send my assistant flowers or an edible arrangement! I work in a different office than my assistant so I prefer gifting her something that can be delivered.

Any insight into what NY Biglaw counsel positions pay? I imagine it varies but I think my firm may be majorly lowballing with basically just senior associate salary. Bonuses are likely just top of associate scale too so max $100k. I hear people leaving for much higher paid counsel spots elsewhere so curious.

Know for a fact I do not want to do litigation after one year. Want to try transactional work because I eventually would like to go in house. Firm reluctant to move me around right now because there’s a lot of work in litigation. I don’t want to wait around hoping they will put me in another practice area and jeopardizing my chances at an in-house position. Should I be looking for new jobs?

I just got offered a job with a firm that has billable hour requirements. I’ve never had had billable hours. Is is appropriate to ask what the billable requirements are? I have a good idea from someone I know who works in a different department but want to confirm what they told me. They also provided vacation time of 3-5 weeks. I’m assuming that’s work weeks, but is that appropriate to ask for clarification? I don’t want them to think that’s all I care about, but these are important to me.

Suggestions for a team-wide task system? The main partner I work for wants me to create and continuously update an internal list of tasks/timeline/important deadlines for every litigation we’re working on. So far I’ve been just updating a Word Doc and sending it to the team every day or two but it’s not very convenient since I don’t know what new tasks the rest of the team is working on. (We use Gmail rather than Outlook if that makes a difference.) Has anyone used Monday software for this?

Given the massive supply chain issues right now, I’m trying to start my Christmas shopping early this year. I don’t work in big law, but some of my classmates, who are going into big law, are bragging about the low number of billable hours they are required to hit. I’m hearing 1,600-1,800 billable hours. Is this actually true? Are some firms paying Cravath and only requiring 1,600 for the year? I know it depends on the firm, but can anyone actually confirm this is their experience? If so, then I’m a little jealous 🙃
