I’ve done this since 18 yrs ago, it’s a natural habit when you grow up in the ghetto lol
Same here (grew up East LA) - always thinking of ways to break and defend against ppl to protect myself

We’re consultants who love frameworks — so here’s one from the military! If you’re on high alert all the time, you will exhaust yourself and not be prepared for the threat. Focus your attention as is needed.
White is straight chilling with nothing going on. Yellow is spidey senses tingling — you see something out of the ordinary. Orange is potential, specific threat identified, and you are actively planning out scenarios to respond. Red is actual threat identified and preparing for active combat or escape. Black is actively engaged and in the fight.
If there’s structure to your awareness, you won’t get so tired. In the past two years, I have gone orange five times and red twice, and I would say I’m more jumpy than most. It sucks to have to do this, but use every tool you can.

This is what being a woman feels like
I am a woman and I’m already generally very careful. But this is a different kind of paranoia I can’t shake.
I feel you... I’m very paranoid. I’m most afraid someone will attack me from behind, which we know has happened already especially to our elders
Me for sure
Yeah same, and it is exhausting but it could save your life so it’s kinda worth

Second nature for me at this point. Situational awareness has either saved me or others from danger.
a white guy came up to my house door without carrying anything (package/pamphlets/folders) and i honestly got really scared. we didn’t answer the door
I think the answer to this may be dependent on where you’re located. I’m in DC and haven’t changed the way I go out since the hate crimes gained more attention.
That being said, it must be pretty scary being in NYC or SF right now. I’d be more more aware going out if I lived in those cities.
Same 💔 I’m in NYC. As a small woman, I’ve always been a bit hyper aware, but now it’s at the next level.
