Is anyone else losing mental health professionals left and right? My office has gone through THREE in the last year.

As someone who left the social work fields recently, there is a lot of burn out in the field and many people are not treated well, overloaded with cases, and paid unfairly. I think there’s a big push for people in the mental health field to stand up right now and say enough is enough, so people are leaving when the job is not as promised because they are truly a dime a dozen right now.

LA County Public Mental Health has lots of bonuses right now. Around $18K/yr. I'm not sure which incentives are statewide. There's also student loan forgiveness options after 2-5 years. The agencies are short staffed tho.

As a MH professional/Licensed social worker, I’m glad to see my colleagues leave agencies that don’t respect our profession through compensation. This field is in crisis due to lack of adequate compensation alone. I would suggest implementing exit interviews to gain insight into how to improve as an organization. High turn over is more of a reflection on the issues within the agency system not so much of the employees.

It’s not necessarily about paid salaries as much as about insurance reimbursement. Even in a group private practice, I’m making double than I was in a SUD agency in less hours a week and about 3x the time off. Even unpaid time off.

I thought, before I left my engineering career, I might want to go solo. But I hate marketing and networking. Just send me the hurting who are seeking hope. I’ll see them.

From home. As long as insurance keeps paying.

Mental health professionals have had a heavy lift in the last few years, especially the POCs. Lucky for us, lots of those skills are transferrable to higher paying spaces. We out!!

Marketing also, especially behaviors! Look up corporate social workers.

I am in private practice, and see so many friends in the field struggle, especially since the pandemic, with higher workloads, increased stress, and a huge demand in the field which means if you work for an agency you are pushed to work harder with less support, while coworkers leave seeking better positions. When there is a growing mental health crisis, pushing therapists past the point of burnout is the worst thing to do, and yet here we are. We need to normalize lower workloads and better support and benefits if we want to address this crisis.

As a working Licensed Therapist the opportunities are endless for our career. Automy and Salary will keep us working. I’ve always said “before long this position will earn just as much as Medicsl

Hi Erin what’s your questions?

I am not losing them but when my staff retire it is hard finding replacements.

Yep, pay doesn't keep up with the economy. We had 10 interviews and 3 no-shows

YES. Down to 1.5 therapists at one site and 0 at another. I have 5 positions open and my MH Manager just resigned so I am recruiting for that position while taking over their work too. Please send help

We're seeing INSANE turnover at our office...we're scrambling trying to figure out what to do

Yeah for the past two years working in psych I think I’ve seen at least maybe ~60 great coworkers quit and see new cohorts almost every month. The hospital I work at mandatories staff if there are sick calls (which shouldn’t be our problem) and a lot of us stay for 16hr shifts even when needing to come back the next morning. I could understand why we quit.

Yes! This year 2 of them left. Apparently, they don't get paid enough.

Very true. My, already super small department, lost 2 out of 6 full time psychologists. I feel bad that I also decided to leave too. The waitlist just keeps growing. This mass resignation thing is real.

Has anyone left healthcare and is now really happy? I’m an MSN, RN with 12 years hospital experience. I’m burned out and tired of making crap pay. I have an opportunity outside of healthcare that would pay more and challenge me in new ways that I haven’t experienced before. It’s a total shift that would really heal my work-life balance, job satisfaction and budget. My only fear is that I would not be using the license and degree that I worked so hard for. I would appreciate any input!!!!

I was going to get screened for this during college but COVID sent me home before I could go in. Now, I can barely get myself to do work. It’s easy work but I need the pressure to do it. I’m 23 and in SoCal.

Pros:

- fairly decent place to work (from someone who worked with the Vancouver and San Jose offices). never met a blue badger (permanent employee) who had awful things to say.

- Ashley Goodall (their SVP, Methods & Intelligence) co-authored a brilliant book on leadership and people management called “Nine Lies About Work” that makes me believe they can be an awesome place to work

Cons:

- red badgers had low morale since they’re contract workers and can be terminated at any time
