Is anyone else navigating challenging family dynamics in the face of another COVID surge over the holidays? I have a sister close to my own age with 4 kids (2 are under 5 the other 2 are over 5) and who recently overcame breast cancer and she refuses to get herself and her eligible children vaccinated. My husband and I are both vaccinated (and boosted) and feel very uncomfortable traveling home to visit with family. My mom is making it a huge issue and doesn’t understand our reasons, despite

I wouldn’t go; and prepare to reevaluate the sustainability of having your sister in your life now that she’s walking down this path, it probably will not end with tests and vaccinations.

It would be one thing if she was just resisting on her own (in which case I still wouldn’t go, but everyone’s positions could be mutually acknowledged/respected), but the “liberal sheep”comments; she’s drawing a wedge, not you.

Tell your mom to butt out, as you’d like to maintain a relationship with her but that requires her being respectful of you.

Half my fam including me are "liberal sheep" too. It's rough. Forcing testing is our solution. I would watch the brainwashing episode on Explained on Netflix. Really helpful in understanding why people are becoming more radicalized and what to do about it (reintegrating them into the family/community, bc the self-identified black sheep are more susceptible).

It’s an 8+ hour drive for us to go home and even if we test when we leave, there’s no guarantee we won’t pick it up on the way. We’re not concerned about getting it ourselves, I’m concerned about inadvertently bringing it with me and giving it to my immune compromised sister.

No one in my family will even engage in a rational discussion about testing. Everyone is afraid to even talk to my sister about so forced testing is even an option for us.

I’m just so exhausted from being made to feel guilty and as though we’re selfish for thinking about their health.

Yes. The Trump voters in my family refuse to get vaccinated while the Biden voters are all vaccinated.

I will never understand and never ever ever get over the despair I feel at how this pandemic got so partisan.

No I’m not letting this stuff drive any wedges, people believe different things.
Do what you’re comfortable with and give your apologies if you can’t make it.
Or rapid test/find a middle ground so you can visit, since your sister is fine with it being that she is the immunocompromised one.
Either way do what you’re comfortable with and let them sort out their own emotions.
Be well!

I’m perfectly respectful of everyone else’s decisions… I’m just disappointed, frustrated, hurt that my family doesn’t seem to give me the same respect for making my own decisions

We’re not having our cousins at xmas this year due to this.

We’ve also had a rash of canceled holiday parties from people bailing at the last minute, but fortunately all of our friends are lovely and understand completely why people would prioritize family health and safety and want to minimize possible exposures in the lead up.

(Continued) being boosted herself. I fear that this public health issue is going to drive a permanent wedge in my family and it’s exhausting to deal with. And of course my sister’s response is essentially to label us as liberal sheep.

I can’t be the only one dealing with this? Any guidance or advice for not getting dragged down by all this?

Therapy. Having someone to talk to who can help give you the tools to navigate such a complex situation. I’m sorry this is happening OP.

like

She made her decision to not get vaccinated and you can make the same decision to not go home for Xmas. You cannot care more about her than she does herself.

Simply put- don’t go if it makes you uncomfortable. That’s the beauty of America. Freedom of choice

I think the point of my post has been lost… my family isn’t respecting my choice and is guilt tripping and ridiculing me for my choice. I’m lamenting how a public health issue has become partisan and my toxic family members are capitalizing on it. Really a crappy situation to be in.

Maintain your boundaries. It sucks that your sister has taken this position. It’s sucks that your mom is (essentially) letting your sister’s choices cause drama for the whole family by not supporting you when you set boundaries. As someone else said- talk to a therapist about this. You can’t change them or what they think about you. All you can do is deal with your own feelings about this.

I have 2 SIL that are fully in the wellness to extremism pipeline. It’s sad to watch. They have become so closed off to anything that challenges their beliefs in the slightest. I wish it were different. I wish my daughter could see her cousins again, but that might not happen for a while. They are careless with COVID but also very vocal about their severely uneducated and toxic views. We just cannot expose our daughter to people who evangelize conspiracy theories, now matter how sad the kids get about not hanging out. My hope is that this changes and mellows over the next few years. Until then, we will send gifts and cards and cookies.

I’m sorry OP!

Do you think using “him/her” for “he/she” (ex: “her is playing” “him not here yet”) is something that kids usually grow out of? Or does it need direct intervention? I have 2 students who exhibit this error, who otherwise should be dismissed. Normally I’d just keep them on and work on it alongside other goals, but they don’t have any other goals, and with COVID, and my upcoming maternity leave in March, a more compact caseload would be advantageous.

Hi all,
I graduated during Covid with a double major in business administration and business management with a minor in marketing and magically ended up in sales because I needed a job. I’m about to take a data analytics course to make an attempt to break into that field. I’m currently looking for a mentor to help guide me during this time. Also, if anyone is willing to look over my resume and give me tips on how to make it more presentable for recruiters in DA that would be very helpful. Thanks

I feel trapped abroad and locked in a dysfunctional system. We're just in limbo, it's depressing
