You personally know 4 people who have been robbed in the past two weeks?? That’s actually insane even from a pure probability standpoint
18th district covers most of Lincoln Park and all of Old Town. Robbery is a crime against a person, theft is a crime against property.
No change in robbery vs. the same period last year and OP knows 10% of the people robbed in the 18th district in the last 28 days. Seems like really bad luck.
Make sure not to elect the same people that are in charge of the city/state during the elections.

Could be due to the market downturn. People claim to be robbed of their rolex or diamond bracelet to file fake police report to get an insurance claim. It's not uncommon for their to be an uptick when the market turns. Sort of like spikes in arson when housing prices fall.
Yeah that’s it I bet. Nothing to do with the current crime wave.
I’m in Roscoe, we were just commenting that crime seemed down vs last year. Our local FB groups have almost no incidents anymore vs last year when it was constant.
Unfortunately, this has been going on for a long while now. Until Foxx and Brown are voted out, it will not get better. Criminals are no longer held accountable in this city.
Funny — I commented on this months ago. There were a vocal bunch in staunch opposition then. Where are they all now?

SC2, Can you post a link?
If citywide 2022 crime is up 38% vs 2021, but only up 12% vs 2019, with a gradient from 12 to 38 in between, doesn't that imply citywide crime was dropping from 2019 to 2021?
Like, if the crime score was, say, 100 in 2019, and 2022 is 12% worse, so 112, but 112 is 38% higher than 2021, then the crime score of 2021 was 81 (81 * 1.38 is 112), right?
The responses to this thread are laugh out fucking loud. Yes crime is up in this city, look at the policies the liberal leadership has put in place - defunding the police, you can’t chase criminals and anyone arrested on a gun charge is let out that day
Crime will eventually ruin this city, people don’t even go out in river north anymore, It’ll just get worse

Having done a quick Google, it looks like news coverage of crime has increased since 2019, especially on Fox, where it went up 4x. As seen in the article, crime didnt go up 4x. While this article is at a national scale rather than local, it generally supports the idea that recent crime concerns are being driven by media and political partisanship moreso than an actual change in crime.

A little spooked too, heard of a couple friends that got robbed as well…
Reasons why I moved out of the city
What time did these happen? I know there was a string last weekend but most were late at night near Wrigley.
The picture in my article is actually my security camera footage. These damn teenagers robbed a lady at 10am and pushed her off the sidewalk into a usually super busy main road. Its a miracle she wasn’t run over.
I’ve lived in Chicago 8 years and overall the safety and comfort of doing things has gone down. I use to hop on the red line at 3am drunk off my ass and not once did anything happen to me. Things went downhill after covid and haven’t gone back to the way things were before.
With that being said, i think as long as you’re aware of your surroundings you’ll be fine. I rewatched the footage of the robbery and the lady was so unaware of her surroundings that she didn’t realize they had marked her before she even crossed the street. (The car was turning left and after turning, they waited until she started crossing before jumping out of the car and following her. A bystander even realized they were about to rob the lady and took off.
Being alert and aware is the best defense mechanism.
This is one of the reasons I’m moving to the suburbs
Chicago is horrible for violence right now. Elected officials need to do their jobs and be harder on prosecuting criminals, not letting them off with little to no bail. You want change, it starts with elected officials inforcing laws. Giving criminals a slap on the wrist doesn't prevent crime in teaches them they can keep doing it without concequeces.
😟 could you share where your 4 friends were robbed? I’m considering moving back to Chicago but not sure which areas are safe / unsafe now (moved out of state a few years ago)
Feel very safe in river north - tons of police presence
Maybe it’s the same person that everyone’s talking about - and you all have that one common friend. Sorry not trying to gaslight you OP, just trying get a cheap laugh.

Is there a reversion to the mean happening? People didn't go out nearly as much in 2020 or 2021, resulting in fewer robberies, but now maybe we are returning to pre-covid robbery levels?
Not a good thing of course, but this seems more reasonable at first guess than a huge spike all of a sudden.
There was no huge spike in October. Robberies are literally at the exact same # that they were in the same period last year in the 18th district per CompStat.
FYI- I am very aware that crime is real and that one needs to be careful. I just also try and level set my behavior and level of concern to the actual statistics because it's really easy to get riled up by media and/or anecdotes when the data says something different.
Did they dress nicely? Like brand clothes and purse?
SMC1 the comment implies that if they dress nicely or wear brand name clothes, that they have made themselves a target and to an extent deserved to be robbed because they put themselves in that position. This is very similar to someone that dresses provocatively, acts slutty, etc. where someone would say they probably deserved it because of the way they dressed or acted and put themselves in that position to be taken advantage of. In a civil society where individuals respect the law, their fellow man/woman, and people’s possessions these types of crimes shouldn’t happen. But hey we have a mayor, a prosecutor, and a governor that don’t seem to give a damn about cleaning up the streets and dealing with the scum that run amok across the city.
So when they rob you, do they ever make you transfer them money on venmo or something? I can’t imagine just robbing someone of their wallet/purse will get the criminal very far these days?
What about like an ach to another account. Yes ther can trace it but so what if the money is gone/spent how would you get it back
