Is anyone else who works in SPED dealing with students who are coming to school sneezing + coughing, cannot consistently keep masks on, and don’t understand social distancing? I absolutely used to love what I do but I’m feeling extremely anxious about guidelines not being followed within these groups. I am high risk and so are my family members. I don’t know what else to do and it might be time for me to go, but I would miss my students so much. I’m feeling stuck! Please tell me I’m not alone?

No - our school is doing a pretty good job. All mask are on at all times - teachers are in halls reminding to social distance. Our desk are apart and seats have shields between them. All of us are cleaning like crazy after every class. Our change into the new 9 wks has brought back many kids from Virtual.

like

You are not alone. Our district purchased desk shields and supplied us with limited PPE. It’s going to be a lot of work initially, but students will learn the new routine. Meanwhile, we are exposed, so we need to be vigilant and focus on helping them learn the routine. Hope this helps. Hang in there, you will be fine.

We are getting ready to return in CA, students in lower grades are being “encouraged” to wear mask. I teach SDC, I have parents that saw that as a NO mask, I’ve talked to admin and parents, any sign of Covid the student will be sent home (i.e coughing and runny nose) we ain’t dealing with that! I wouldn’t mind it before, but due to the lack of social distancing and makes wearing, I’m notified the nurse ASAP.

I understand how you feel. This is a very difficult time. I heard on the news how Colleges are closing in November it is possible H.S. will follow and do distance learning.

like

We are required to send all students with Covid symptoms, which include coughing and sneezing, to the nurse, who in turn send the children home until the parents provide proof of a negative Covid test. That’s the only way to stay even remotely safe

We aren’t wearing masks or even really social distancing...so I understand what you mean 😞. If I could go, I would be gone ....

Severe profound teacher here. Most of my students who cannot/ will not wear a mask have opted for distance learning. I physically go to their houses one time a week minimum armed with a thermometer and a mask. I do not enter the house and we have a short lesson in the driveway or on the porch. This is EXHAUSTING. I have awesome administrative support, and I will power through because I cannot imagine having these 8 students in a classroom all day with no masks. I have a couple that I have to assist with nose blowing (I teach 6th - 12th)

like

Yes

Yep. And as long as they don't have a fever they stay. 😔

In CA, at least at my high school...when we return the students must wear a mask, and if they don’t they must go home and enroll in Distance learning

This is how it is in my school as well. We have not had any students refuse to wear a mask. Some require multiple reminders, and I do give kids short mask breaks outside when I’m able (I teach special education). I should also note we are located in a very conservative area where most believe masks are a waste of time/money. Despite that, our students and parents are following the guidelines.

Additional Posts in Special Education Teachers

O am a SPED teacher who was teaching K-4. As of Nov. 28th, my administrator switched me with the other SPED teacher who was teaching middle school. There was no warning. We just got an email on a Sunday. Neither one of us wants thos move. Do we have a legal ground to stand on? We have both been so upset and depressed over this. My students miss me, and I miss them. I taught middle school years ago and was not fond of it. I like the littles.

Looking for advice on a situation where a new teacher used IEP and ETR data directly (copied and pasted literally word for word) from a previous IEP/ETR directly to her IEP without adding present level data. She went so far as to keep many of the same goals from the previous year that the student mastered as well.

This was all after the IEP fell out of compliance and was a month overdue. I feel like the district and family should be aware.
