Is anyone familiar with using Canvas for your classroom? Likes/Dislikes? Bonus points for uses in intermediate grade levels. 😉

The high-school pretty much requires it...and while it's not mandatory for me, the teachers seem to like it. They can put all their lessons, etc... on there so the kiddos know exactly what needs to be done. It was also handy during covid when the kids were at home.

NO. Big learning curve. Hard to remember how to do those things that you only need to do once a quarter. My school mandated it for a few years and went to Google last year. Thank heavens!

I love Canvas. Once you pick up on a few tricks it is extremely user friendly. Also, as it is electronic, students can’t say that they lost their homework. Also, I link all of my slides, handouts, worksheets, study guides, etc. on it so students can always review or access things that they need to catch up on if they miss class. I teach 7th graders and they generally have no problems learning how to use it.

@IMS, Thanks. This was very helpful.

We used Class Dojo and Google Classroon!

Canvas is our mandated platform next year. That's why I'm curious about people's experiences with it.

We have used it for a few years now. It takes a little getting used to at first- kind of clunky in the beginning, finding features, learning settings, etc. but it is great! It depends what features your district turns on and allows but a few nice things…You can email students, parents, or observers (paras, others teachers you choose to share your class with) and messages can be sent individually or as a class. If you use the calendar and assign a due date to the graded assignment students and parents can see it in their calendar as well. Students can turn all work in online if you choose- no paper needed- though I see you teach elementary and I’m not sure if you have 1-1 devices to help with this or if they have devices at home or would even want online assignments but it is a great option when appropriate. For those who teach multiple classes it allows easily for different groups, clubs, and tiles. You can set up quizzes or tests that self grade and set up collaborative groups with other individuals in your department, district, area, etc to share materials once created. Videos can be imbedded into canvas. There are group assignments that can be utilized. It works with flipgrid, nearpod, zoom, google drive and google assignments, and more. You can send class announcements that will alert them as soon as they login. For us it has been a great tool and teachers and students are fully immersed doing almost every assignment paperless I’m not sure that the elementary grades here use it as fully yet though. Overall, be ready to give it a little time in the beginning but it can be really nice for sharing info through a common place. Good luck!

@KHS, Thank you for this. This was extremely helpful. Yes I teach elementary, but we are being required to utilize this platform this school year, though our students are on campus. My school is 1-1 device this year, so students will be able to use the program at the same time. Thanks again for your thoughtful response.

I really like it as a high school teacher. It allows me to put up work and lessons for the day online, so even if a student can't make it to class they can see the work and attempt it. It also offers them a way to reach out if they have questions. Another bonus is it tells you how much time a student has spent logged in and the last time they logged in. One of the biggest issues I have with it is that it is all online. If a student doesn't have a stable internet connection or access through a device it's not going to work. This was a huge problem for our district as kids were unable to get to their work when we were shut down.

@MHS, Thanks for the feedback. This was very helpful.

I loathe canvas.

Good luck! I hope you end up loving canvas!

I liked it for high school. It has a little bit of a learning curve.

It took me a couple of weeks of you tube videos to learn all of its tools. It’s pretty rich in capabilities but you have to learn how to do all of the things

required, used it all last year, HS math

Did you like/dislike it? Was it more helpful or hassle?

Well, you have to keep your class very engaged on google classroom and constantly call on them to reassure they’re still with you! For the most part, most were alert and on task!

Is Google Classroom connected to Canvas? I had the same issues with engagement in TEAMS last year as well. 😔

I like Canvas for keeping myself organized. It was also required for all teachers to use it in my district. Overall, i had a positive experience. I teach 9-12.

Thanks for the feedback. Did you find it was pretty accessible for students? I teach 10/11-year-olds, so I realize the age difference matters. But knowing HS experience gives me a place to start.

I love Canvas. It helps you go paperless in your classroom.

So they do everything online through the platform?

My school was in person five days a week last year, with a remote option for families. I taught an in person preschool group in the morning and a remote preschool group in the afternoon. Canvas was the required platform for remote teachers. Once you learn how to navigate it (I also used many YouTube videos) it can be a great tool. Because of the age of my students I designed my Home Screen to be more like a webpage with “button” for different subjects. I then prerecorded lessons and posted them to these “buttons” (pages). Kids watched video lessons and did corresponding activities that sometimes involved paper/pencil. Good luck, and be kind to yourself. You will learn as you go, and change things that don’t work. Be honest with your students from the beginning that it is a new platform, and that you will be learning how to use it together. This will allow for honest feedback and alterations along the way.

It’s a lifesaver if you can train your kids how to navigate it .

United lost my son's car seat on a 3 hr flight. It was registered as a checked luggage with the proper csrseat tag and everything. After following up with an agent after we landed, they said it stayed in EWR and they are working to get it shipped to me in the next day or so while I'm on vacation. Anyway to get points for the inconvenience, I'm Premier platinum if it matters. They did give me a free loaner carseat until mine arrives but it's kinda crappy tbh.

Why does everyone say PE is a “low risk” way to make a lot of money? Once you hit VP level, isn’t the majority of your compensation in carry, which doesn’t get paid out until 5-7 years AFTER it is earned (while in consulting, your bonus is paid out in the year it’s earned)? And if you look at the CALPERS database, don’t many funds of mega fund/UMM PE firms fail to exceed the hurdle rate? So even at established UMM/MF PE firms there’s a possibility you’ll get no carry?
