Is anyone here a male obgyn or uses a male obgyn? If so, why?! I understand for most medical conditions the doctor may not have personal experience with it, but dealing with lady parts and birth is common and I feel more comfortable with a female doctor.

I always went to women OBGYNs until I moved to a new city several years ago. I asked for recommendations and several of my coworkers recommended this male dr. I was skeptical but gave him a try. I ended up loving him! Who knew? He have been practicing forever but was also a professor so was up on all the latest info. He listened, really listened to me. We started out every appointment in his office so we could sit and chat face-to-face. Honestly, he understood some of my issues better than female docs did. Maybe it was the years of experience or his willingness to listen to me, but when I had a problem he actually fixed them.

I think the most important piece is YOUR PERSONAL peace of mind. If you want a female, go to a female if it'll make you feel better!

My personal opinion and view is doctors choose their specialty 3-4 years into med school and that basically sets them up for the rest of their life. It's not like consulting where you can pivot to tech, finance, etc.

So in my mind, a doctor who CHOSE to be an OBGYN is truly passionate about it and not trying to be creepy sketchy.

You're telling me this guy spent $200k on med school debt just to creep on lady parts? Unlikely imo

There are plenty of men who want to be seen as an expert and want to intimidate people out of pushback on skeevy behavior that goes unchecked in the medical field. Tons of male doctor assaulters

To me a doctor is a doctor, couldn’t care less who I see.

Agreed. I’ve had male gynos my whole life in various countries without any issue.

All my obgyns have always been male and I've never felt any discomfort with any of them. They took excellent care of me.
They are doctors and they are professionals and they are not interested in their patients' "lady parts".

The ob-gym who took me through two pregnancies and deliveries was HOT. I loved seeing him.

There is data that shows patient-doctor pairs do better when they're the same sex. It's not intentional, it's just that as much as a man may study a woman's body in theory, they can not empathize with what it means to have a woman's body. Same goes for female doctors with male patients. Men don't have vaginas and uteruses, women don't have penises and prostates. This results in some care in opposite sex pairings feeling impersonal or even negligent.

I use a male OBGYN. I like him better than my previous female one

I have been to a man before but when given the choice I always see women dr.'s for this, just my preference

My wife had a male obgyn in Chicago. She absolutely loved him and I agree he was easily the best doctor I have seen (both in terms of capabilities and bedside manner). I have heard that male obgyns have to be extra nice and gentle to their patients.

like

Yes this last statement is true, they are super nice.

like

It doesn’t matter to me.. dr is a dr. Every man I’ve seen has been super professional

To that end if anyone can recommend a gyno in NYC, I need a new one

My woman Obgyn brushed off my severe abdominal pain (that came with nausea and the inability to stand up) and told me to just increase my pain killers as it’s normal to have period cramps. A year later I ended up in emergency surgery with a ruptured 8cm Endometrioma, internal bleeding (needed blood transfusion) and follow up surgery revealed I had stage 4 endo. So ya, maybe doctors bedside manners and experience are more important. All subsequent doctors to treat me have been male.

I always went to a female until a scheduling mistake put me with a new male doctor during my second pregnancy. I loved his bedside manner, so I kept him and he did an amazing job with my c-section. I’m sticking with him until he retires. He may not have a female body but he’s been working on them for 20+ years and is 10x better than any of the women I saw previously.

My SO swears by male drs because they do not have vaginas so they are more gentle than female drs

Make nurses and male doctors are just as good as female doctors and female nurses. They see so many bodies that they couldn’t care less what yours looks like. It just a body part to them.

I prefer female obgyn, but I prefer female medical practitioners of all specialties. Not because I think either gender is better at medicine, but because I have high anxiety about both my body and about male authority figures.

like

I’ve had both. I focus on qualifications/board certs/ratings. If i can see a highly ranked physician who also accepts my coverage, that’s what i go with. Generally, the better the doctor ranks the better they are at treatment = better outcomes and lower cost.

I had a male gyn-oncologist who i selected based on rankings/ratings and my treatment was fantastic with a very speedy recovery.

My mom and my friend’s male OBGYNs sexually assaulted them, so I only see Female OBGYNs, no exceptions.

Except while giving birth when all rules hit the fan and upwards of 20 nurses, residents and doctors both male and female see and touch you, but there was always at least one other person in the room so I guess that made me more comfortable

like

I do! I love mine but that’s because I was referred to him by a family friend. He’s so wonderful, kind, educated, listens to me and recommends things without pushing anything on me. He’s also like, 60 so he’s retiring soon and I’m STRESSING

I have generally had male obgyn. They were all good.

Similar question - do dudes/would dudes see a female manparts doctor? Like, for testicles and prostate or whatever?

like

You bet. I'm a dude and prefer to be seen by female doctors if at all possible, no matter the reason. My PCP is a woman, my urologist is a woman, my audiologist is a woman, my dentist is a woman, and so on.

The only male doctor I've gone to in the past 10+ years is a sports physician, and that's only because he's also a swimmer and is quite familiar with the particular ailments common and often nearly exclusive to that sport.

Anyone else struggle to eat enough calories? My current diet plan has me set to eat 1600 cals/day. I can barely hit 1000. I am trying to lose fat weight/gain muscle and am eating a high protein x Mediterranean diet. I am SO full after each meal, considering water intake on top, I can't figure out how to get more cals in without eating calorie dense foods (which are typically less healthy). I am exercising on top so net cals is even less (which I probably need to stop until I can eat more).

Question: How do you get your heart rate down?
