30% makes sense if you add Federal + NY state tax. And if you are not on student visa, then add an additional 6% of Medicare and social security tax
OP I think it’s visa dependent so CPT or OPT, it shouldn’t be withheld.
That sounds pretty typical. Not sure what you mean by how to deal but you do have to pay income taxes even if you’re not a US citizen.
Welcome to America. We have to somehow fund our beautiful and strong military and the super-rich for sure won’t...
As far as I know:
1) student exemption only counts during the school term. If you’re working FT over the summer without class credit, you pay Medicare and SS taxes for whatever you earn during summer.
2) if Canada treaty is anything like treaties between states, you get NY taxes withheld now on paychecks and that reduces your tax liability to the other jurisdiction, but that gets calculated at year end when you file taxes.
There’s a lot more details which are too long to get into on this kind of forum and depend on your exact situation, so you should ask another student or your school’s international student office in person.
NOT TRUE. You don’t pay SS/Medicare as long as you are under F visa, regardless of whether it’s CPT or OPT. It doesn’t matter whether you are attending at that time
Have you tried reading the tax code a little at least? International too - just gotta read it up. That’s actually quite little given you’re in NY(C?)
That tax treaty doesn’t come into play in relation to you making money in the US itself.
