Depends on the emotional maturity of the counselor. If they’re someone that has the goal of being a partner and retiring from the firm, they might clutch their pearls over an admission that you don’t want the same thing. If they’re realists they’ll know that plenty of people in big4 firms have industry as an end goal and they will give you advice to get the most out of your consulting experience (any maybe become a potential client down the road!)
Agree with this 100%. Would only be honest with someone who is realistic and open-minded about the fact that everyone is not trying to make partner. Although my counselor is interested in making partner, she's open-minded, so I felt comfortable telling her what my actual goals are. She supports me.
I told my coach ......not looking for a title or additional responsibility ....just doing a good job and getting paid for it is all I want
I was absolutely real about that. It's important to let them know so they can help you shape your goals and get what you can out of the job.
I’ve been lucky with my counselors in the past. Recently moved into M&A consulting—all of whom who have really helped me bounce back and make sure I wasn’t screwed. Not sure how I feel about revealing my thoughts to my new counselor as folks in my current group seem more loyal to the idea of partnership than I am.
