Oh man, you gotta get into the “meat n threes” if you’re in the south! The more unassuming looking the building the better. My order is fried chicken, collard greens, and fried okra. If they offer the option, fried cornbread as well. My act of southern rebellion is ordering unsweet tea and adding Splenda, but get some form of iced tea regardless. In sum, to get used to the most authentic southern food, acquire a taste for all things fried :) That said, you’ll find “foodie” restaraunts throughout the south that may have a more universal and less artery clogging appeal.

I think a good gateway would be starting with the types of lunch options people in your state commonly eat and move on from there.

For me sandwiches were a great place to start. If you live in the NY area, try to find a Jewish deli and start with some basic meat sandwiches that you could take out for lunch. (Pastrami with Muenster cheese on toasted Rye bread is one of my favorites). It’ll help you get an idea of the meat/cheeses combinations you like and don’t.

Fast food places are gross and are more representative of America and than they are of American food.

Other “American” cuisines are italian food, bakes, one-pan meals (if you are cooking at home), creole, soul, and Mexican food (empanadas, beans/rice, tacos).

You have a standard and expectation for food. Lower it, substantially.

Don’t go to chain restaurants! Although the US is “known” for fast food the majority of people would rather eat at local restaurants. Also try out places near you with more culturally-based food - a lot of us don’t eat hamburgers and hotdogs on the daily lol

likehelpful

There are 330m of us. You can have all of the above:

100m+ people they eat at fast food/big chain “American” restaurants nearly daily
100m+ who eat it occasionally
100m+ who eat it rarely/never

Just rounding there, but you get the idea.

McDonald’s and Applebee’s represent American cuisine in one sense for sure, a section of it. But you wouldn’t stop there and conclude you’ve tasted American style cuisine, anymore than eating Taco Bell and El Torito and concluding you’ve eaten all of Mexican American cuisine.

Or conclude you’ve eaten your way across the Philippines because you ate at Jollibee.

Or conclude Japanese cuisine is primarily 100 different flavors of Kit Kat’s from convenience stores. Etc etc.

I’m loling that you live in NY and went to these crappy chains and assumed that’s how American food is when NY has some of the best restaurants on earth 😂

likefunny

Hahaha please don’t ever go to those places again. Try some local places before you rule out American food 😂

like

Don’t eat our garbage processed fast food, you might as well just try to exist off our candy bars.

Remember there is more to the US than fast food burgers. Southern creole, BBQ, hell even our bastardized recreations of foreign foods (“sushi” consisting of sauces up rolls half full of avocado put into a fryer... authentic no, delicious yes!)

Try a good bagel, pastrami sandwich, NYC style pizza slice, and hell even the halal guys food cart before you consider yourself immersed in local cuisine.

Asian American here....I can go months without Asian food. But the minute I visit my parents and eat a home cooked meal, there’s a level of happiness and satisfaction that I forgot I’ve been missing out on....add 10x to the happiness factor if I’m on a project to a town with crap food choices (read: Gary, Indiana) 😂😂

Olive Garden is a terrible American bastardization of Italian food. You said you’re in NY? Tons of great authentic Italian places that aren’t even in the same category as Olive Garden. Find a good burger joint, real burgers, not McDonald’s. NY pizza isn’t quite the same as neopolitan pizza (though some places come close) but can hold its own as a class of pizza. And bagels! Jewish delis! There are tons of great non-Asian options if you avoid the chains. As others said, BBQ, creole in the south are unreal. Lobster rolls in the northeast, Baja California style in the west, etc etc. Look for regional specialties instead of fast food.

For the record I’m Asian and Chinese food will always be my go-to but I love trying all the cuisines from other cultures!

likehelpful

I dunno there are a lot of good meatball subs out there, that feels pretty American.

Hah, why would you want to get used to the terrible southern kitchen?

As a Northern European I can tell you, even the thing Americans classify as not white bread is definitely white bread. Sure it may say whole grain or whatever on it....

Lol that’s not American food. That’s chain restaurant frozen crap.

I had no idea. You wouldn’t believe how they are branded to non-local eyes...

Most Americans probably don’t eat a specific type of American food. It’s mostly regional. I’ve found that larger southern states have pockets of ethnic areas that have very good food options. Find those.

Ask locals for recommendations - great way to meet people and start conversations. Also, look for local publications and web sites - most have restaurant reviews and top lists. Be adventurous - even if you don’t love it, you’ve had a new experience.

One more thought - look for ethnic markets. You can buy products there, many have food courts and you can definitely ask people there for restaurant recommendations. Good luck and enjoy!

Where are you located? What type of asian food do you like? If you like sushi and seafood, maybe you will like oysters and alaskan king crabs. Try figure out the type of food you like and then go to non-asian restaurants that serve similar food but cook in a different way. Also, don’t go to chains.

Yeah I've had a decent amount of Mexican on visits to NY. Not as bad as midwest Mexican but, on the whole, doesn't hold a candle to the southwest IMO (though I'm sure there are some good spots)
