Is asking for 20% more base during a new job interview too much? Just had a call with a recruiter and she seemed audibly shook...

Don't mention your base in the future, people still think that your new salary should match your old for some reason. Just state your salary requirements and be done

Sometimes I mention I’m looking for a pay bump and mention a number.

I feel like that’s part of the recruiters “act” particularly when interviewing candidates early in their career. Don’t be intimidated. 20% is perfectly reasonable to leave a job, especially early in your career where you can likely be successful anywhere.

like

Depends on the level. Analyst, not likely. The more you move up, the more flexibility there is

like

You should be asking for more. The market is hot right now. Your potential new employer is delusional. Ask for what you can command. If they act up, move on. Do you really want to work for a delusional employer?

like

20% is perfectly fine...the fact that the recruiter seemed shook doesn't look well for them, as they need to also realize that this is the negotiation process and you gave them the first # to start this process off

like

No. It’s usually 20-30%

like

Min 20%, unless you’re close to fresh/entry-level. I think you were within the ballpark. Anecdotally I had a recruiter scoff at meeting my current salary when I had three competing written offers that were 25-30% above my current salary. They actually had the audacity to ask “Well why are you asking for that much when that’s not what you currently make?” ...I just told you why.

like

Don't forget that recruiters are negotiators. They're doing their job if they make you more likely to accept less.

Thanks I’ll keep that in mind and stick to my $110k, maybe even bump it to $120k based on other responses since I’m hoping for a promotion this year

like

It is always ok to ask for more when negotiating when you have the offer. Whether or not you state a salary demand earlier in the process, and what that amount is, are different topics. Targeting 20% more is fine. I'd bump to 30, especially if you are near promo. Recognize that not every recruiter is looking for or able to accomodate a candidate with high salary demands. This is an issue across levels in consulting. A recruiter at big 4 or a tech firm may pay 100k for 2yoe, but maybe not brick/mortar retail. If you can identify this disconnect early in the process, you can save youself some time. Google "golden handcuffs".

like

Keep applying to other roles. Develop expertise, specialization and/or credentials that allow you to justify a 120k+ salary. Network so you can get referrals. Optimize your LinkedIn profile to get inbound attention.

That’s the minimum. Total package matters too so I would also give a percentage increase depending on the total comp package - 20-30%. Really depends on what you get now.

like

Yes, and if it's Deloitte, ask for an extra 10% because their benefits are terrible.

I negotiated up to 25%

like

Not at all - just got an offer for 60% more than current base, but I also didn't disclose my current salary. If you're jumping, 20% is minimum
