Thoughts on The Creative Circus?
Kindly disagree. If your 'in' to the agency is creating pitch decks until 4am no one is going to see you as a real ideas person. You will be their work horse. And they will pretend there are other opportunities to shine. But what will really happen is you'll be put on weird deadlines time and time again. In rare cases you can get in people's ear and show them you're capable of more. But I would advise against 'any opportunity is a foot in the door mentality'.
Any foot in the door is a good foot in the door.
I started as a developer and moved into creative. If you are determined and bust your ass, once you're in at a good place, you can make it happen. Depends on how desperate you are and how long you're willing to stick it out for a better option.
If you want to get into creative and are building creative decks tell them you’d like use it as a way to understand the agency and the work, and if they are open to that, why not. You’ll get to know the team and the CDs and can start jumping on briefs. If you’re going to be a presentation designer across capabilities/new biz, you might get stuck there. Depends on the agency. Our agency is really great about bringing people in and if the person fits culturally, we will move them around to find the best fit in terms of capability. You usually have to promise to do the job for which you were hired for a year.
We just move on of our best presentation designer into advertising design. He asked for and we agreed
In my opinion depends on the agency. If you find the team that is able to listen and appreciate your talent and effort you can make the move. It might take a little time and the right agency. (That’s sounds hard...I know)
I personally believe presentation designer deserve the best and they play one of the most important role in pitching. They can make the difference! They should be creative, analytic and empathetic (things that fit other design-related role)
From my observation the presentation designer never feels like a real creative part of the team. Creates distance is what it seems like. I think you would have to be highly proactive is establishing yourself as more than presentation designer if that what you’re after.
