I wonder about this too. I think partners and people coming up in the past tend to automatically say we have it so much easier now because of technology. While that makes us more efficient and makes it easier to get work done, I think that also means that clients not only demand more out of us, but technology also allows us to serve way more clients than we would’ve been able to in the past.
Increased admin that falls on managers bc the firms got rid of admin aupport, increased regulation, increased staff turnover, increased client expectations. I think its harder than 20 years ago
My mom worked PA in late 80s and said they never worked past 8 from her recollection. Arther Andersen also paid OT...
AA did pay overtime but, at least in the 90s, we worked well past 8 during busy season. We did not have a year round busy season like some here seem to have. No laptops and smart phones meant you had to work in the office so when you were home you could disconnect.
No way I’m staying in this long enough to make Manager. Manager basically has to be Associate, Senior Associate, Manager, Partner. I’m a S1 now and it’s bad, maybe I’ll do 1 more busy season and that’s it, but the thought of being a PA Manager gives me nightmares.
Well when you create your budget based on a 55-60% margin, then don’t be so dramatic when you need a write down that still leaves you at a 50% margin. Perspective is everything. The work still has to get done and it’s the request of random things from SMs and EPs that often cause the additional hours over budgeted. Also, sometimes they give you a brand new staff with no experience and no senior and then don’t understand why there is additional manager time. We don’t work in a perfect world and budgeting is not as straightforward as you want it to seem
The constant tax changes every few years now has made it harder. Maybe I was oblivious before I graduated, but I don’t remember there being such drastic tax changes so often 10 years ago
Yes. Just look at how the audit standards and the extent of our documentation evolved... everything is more ‘granular’ now (aka exponentially more crap). Also, SOX used to not exist and pay was much closer to the cost of living.
I think so but I am certainly biased since I’m a senior 😂 I think being remote has only made it harder on those two groups as well
Everyone always thinks they have it harder. Maybe they do.
There’s nothing you can do about that.
But what you CAN do is try to not forget how you felt and don’t make your future staff/seniors feel that way. Empathy may go a long way towards team development.
I LOATHE asking my teams to work late. I tell them not to…
…via emails at 2am.
In my opinion S3 is the easiest level in your career, M1 is the hardest.
I got offers from both EY and Deloitte. The EY recruiter did explain the senior levels and since I would be coming in as a S3 EH that the next promotion from S3 was M1. I would think senior levels would be standard across the company and not group specific since our is tied to your level. Oh well, thanks for the information.
