1000% yes. Left agency to work in tech and it is better in almost every way. Choose a place that you think does good work and you'll be fine.
- I make double what I made in agency
- Work less
- Work with nicer people
- 4 weeks vacation standard
Do I have to do more "boring" writing than in agency? Sure sometimes I do more Web and email. But overall less rounds of revisions and in lots of ways more creative freedom because of my good relationship with client coworkers.
Someone above talked about not doing as "fulfilling" work. Take a look at the agency you're at and assess what % of work you are doing that is really fulfilling vs. bullshit and then how much of your life energy you're willing to spend being fulfilled making car commercials when you could have a slightly more boring job and just...take a poetry class.
Well, if you want work-life balance, pensions and stock options, the agency world isn’t for you. It seems like you haven’t worked in either before based on your bright-eyed response. So at the beginning of agency life, you’re underpaid. As you progress, you get overpaid. Im currently freelancing for $1,000/day. You’ll be doing better work than a tech company, I imagine. At least if you get into a top 15 agency.
I can’t speak for tech, but I imagine you might get paid more and get more benefits. But you might screw yourself if you ever want to go to a good agency afterwards since we’re snobby. I also couldn’t imagine the work’s as fulfilling, but I don’t have the experience to back up that assumption.
Either way, choose a different profession, lol.
I’ve spent 8 years at 3 different “top” agencies and I’m not sure I’ve ever done work I can describe as fulfilling.
In house work might be a bit more boring, but is any of the work agencies are doing right now all that exciting? Seems pretty bland out there right now.
About to find out! Can report back in a few months 😂
How does one find these tech jobs?
LinkedIn— tech companies also tend to have a more normal hiring process
What do you mean by better?
However you define better 😆 cause better looks different to everyone. I’d love to know the pros and cons between tech and agencies in Toronto for the following: creative risk taking (which side waters down creative more?), work life balance, and total comp (including mental/physical/virtual benefits, pension, stock offerings etc.)
