Is being blacklisted the worst thing that can happen if you renege? I feel terrible but after accepting the offer, there have been some kind of weird red flags and I’m starting to think it might not be a good work environment. Plus I have other opportunities out there. I do feel terribly guilty though

What kind of red flags? Better to do it now than start the job and find out you hate it and quit right away. If the other opportunities are better and you’re feeling good about them, then why not go for it. Companies rescind offers all the time so I think it can go both ways.

I dropped out of a job 7 years ago (I got a better offer after I had accepted) and, as far as I can see, there have been zero negative consequences to that decision. Nor have I heard of anyone who has suffered series consequences from reneging on an offer.

Now, I am sure it has happened where people faced consequences and I am sure there are certain conditions where it isn't advisable (e.g. you have an actual contract with penalties for dropping out). But, for the most part - as long as you are okay with burning a bridge at the company in question - it shouldn't hurt your career.

Additional Posts in Interview Tips

I quit my previous job approximately 5-6 months ago due to toxic culture and being pressured to commit fraud. I fear hiring managers see that I’ve been out of work for this time and may assume I was fired or laid off. Additionally I’ve had a couple interviews where company “X” interviewers have commented on this and in an effort to not bad mouth my previous employer I’m stuck with a generic answer like I want to take my career to the next level with Company “X.” I’m stuck. Thoughts/strategies?

Did a first interview with hr rep, went very well. she set up the hiring manager meeting for a few days later. Met with the manager. Another great conversation, went over time and was told I’d hear back about panel set up. Following day I get a request from hr rep to “continue the conversation” with manager. This is set up Tuesday.
Why do you think the manager wants to meet again? Good? Bad? I felt great about the interview when we ended.

Hi I had someone recently tell me I should have my education and certifications above my experience on my resume. Does this group also have a non-compete which prevents you from working a second job should you need more money?

I just finished an interview and the hiring manager made some comments during the interview that I believe are 🚩🚩🚩. Among the comments were, “the person needs to help show Sr. Management the FP&A dept is important and brings value.” “I’m going to be honest, we have other candidates for this position, you need to bring your game to the second interview”. The rest of the interview was describing their problems as a dept and then proceeds to ask if I can handle it. How can I respectfully decline?

Say you went through several interview rounds and were told you were the runner up because the successful candidate had a slight edge over you. Then you see the exact posting a week later. I had an initial interview on Wednesday. About an hour later, I got a call from an internal recruiter from the same company wanting to follow up and see how the interview went. I didn’t see the voicemail until the following morning when I was at work and called her back that afternoon when I was out of work. I still haven’t heard from her. Is this normal? Should I not try calling back again? I’ve been at my job for several years, so I am unfamiliar with how I should handle a situation like this.

I got a job offer for what seems to be a great company but I’m not sure if I would have the same life balance. I started interviewing as a way to see my worth in the industry. My current role is at a small company, and I’m not sure how I could grow within the role because Im not advancing my skill, I just do the same thing every day at a lower level. I like my current role because it’s flexible and I’m paid well for not doing very much work. Should I switch to a more rigorous job?
