It’s 100% a problem. We keep running while the rest of the world gets a day off. After a few years it’s no wonder we’re all burnt out!

like

I suffered burnout after long stretches of being overloaded, and despite telling the partner/seniors that I was not able to manage the workload I’d been given - the response was ‘there’s no solution that involves you not doing this’ and ‘keep going you’re doing well’. I had to take several months off after that and my ability to perform under pressure or do long hours was about 0 for over a year.

What is stress leave? I get the idea but is it a real thing to ask for?

I don’t mind being expected to work on holidays - I just want some say on which ones I have to work! Wish it was more like hospitals where you get lieu time for doing on-call shifts.
Also as a Jewish lawyer I am more than happy to work Christmas if it means nobody gets salty about me taking off for High Holidays at an admittedly inconvenient time.

The lack of control is a major factor. Seniors just dumping a package of work on you without asking you what else you have on (usually a lot of other work) and no conversation or collaborative effort as to how to organize the work around other commitments

At my firm, we don’t even have the day off for a few major holidays. The courts may be closed, but we are not. Even our clients are off. For the first year in my 7 year career, I won’t be seeing my family for either thanksgiving or Christmas.

It’s just part of the onboarding process. I’m not eligible for vacation until 6 months (I’m at 4) and flying cross country just isn’t a priority right now when my work ambition is a bit higher. I’m trying to stand out, and taking extra days off to go home won’t have the impact I’d like.

I firmly believe leadership makes the difference.

Not only, it highlins each one's value, but especially spreads this value among others.
I'm speaking about life, in a broad sense, which also include work life, but it is not limited to that.

Looking for any kind of suggestion to improve my leadership: books, experiences, attitudes, daily-routine, ...

Thank you!

The PE culture is sick. The 20 something VP was rude to our partner because our team took thanksgiving and the day before off and it was in the engagement letter that we were gonna be off. He kept emphasizing that his team did our job while we were on a break. Dude we are not sick like you and we have lives. I see something about how s**t the PE culture is in every deal we support.

Like these sickos make fun of us for working 80+ hours weeks for them and taking thanksgiving off.

Advice requested: When you were a legal intern or a summer, what type of projects did you like best? What was most helpful to you when you received a new assignment? Anything you wish your mentor did/didn’t do? I’m working with my first ever intern and trying to structure projects so they know that the work is important and relevant to the business, and why, and to provide enough background info on the area of law so they don’t spin wheels on the basics. The amount of people, even attorneys, who can't separate out the policy merits of abortion from the issue of whether it is a constitutional right is disappointing. I consider myself pro-choice ---I believe states should allow it, that the federal government can pass a statute to guarantee it, and that FDA statutes and regulations will preempt any state trying to ban chemical abortions through FDA approved drugs. Dobbs at its core is a case about the Due Process Clause, not the policy of abortion
