It’s 100% a problem. We keep running while the rest of the world gets a day off. After a few years it’s no wonder we’re all burnt out!
I suffered burnout after long stretches of being overloaded, and despite telling the partner/seniors that I was not able to manage the workload I’d been given - the response was ‘there’s no solution that involves you not doing this’ and ‘keep going you’re doing well’. I had to take several months off after that and my ability to perform under pressure or do long hours was about 0 for over a year.
What is stress leave? I get the idea but is it a real thing to ask for?
I don’t mind being expected to work on holidays - I just want some say on which ones I have to work! Wish it was more like hospitals where you get lieu time for doing on-call shifts.
Also as a Jewish lawyer I am more than happy to work Christmas if it means nobody gets salty about me taking off for High Holidays at an admittedly inconvenient time.
The lack of control is a major factor. Seniors just dumping a package of work on you without asking you what else you have on (usually a lot of other work) and no conversation or collaborative effort as to how to organize the work around other commitments
At my firm, we don’t even have the day off for a few major holidays. The courts may be closed, but we are not. Even our clients are off. For the first year in my 7 year career, I won’t be seeing my family for either thanksgiving or Christmas.
It’s just part of the onboarding process. I’m not eligible for vacation until 6 months (I’m at 4) and flying cross country just isn’t a priority right now when my work ambition is a bit higher. I’m trying to stand out, and taking extra days off to go home won’t have the impact I’d like.
Just take the day off
