Is Cannes officially dead as a measuring stick for our industry? Hearing a lotttt more horror stories about scam work / vote trading / work that aired once in Kazakhstan winning super high level lions this year. Heard similar stuff in 2019. The jadedness seems to be growing.

Nah. This has always been the case, and always will. Lions will still be better than everything except D&AD unless something massive changes.

I 3D printed a lion. It was way less work than winning one, cheaper, and gives me the same amount of joy.

I just bought a real lion. Gives good cuddles and keeps robbers away.

I was about to post something like this now. Does anyone here have to work the ass out to get a fucking metal? What was the price to win in Cannes? I always feel it’s masked behind the efforts, the work weekends and all the stuff. Besides that point OP, when we will change this fucking industry?

I mean it’s been five years since Grey scammed their way to a lion. This isn’t new. https://www.thedrum.com/news/2016/07/12/cannes-lying-new-chip-shop-awards-category-real-scam-adverts

Hey look where it got Tor 🤭🤷🏻‍♂️

It’s always been a scam. This is why I have such a low opinion of people who crow about their wins. Good work speaks for itself, whether it was submitted or not. Often, award bait didn’t even advertise well. It was made to show other advertisers that you know how to advertise good. Which, clearly, you don’t. I’m glad to have some because certain people like it, I can charge more, and it helps my partner get his green card. Past that, don’t really care.

Sure, it matters in a “this is how the industry awards itself” kind of way. But it’s just an extension of inter-agency politics. I don’t think a creative should consider themselves less successful if they haven’t won awards. It’s also very much an industry. Cannes accepted what, 30k submissions this year? It costs a lot of money just to submit. Plus a yearly subscription just to see the work is 2k. The hype machine feeds itself, so don’t let it get you down.

Similar stuff has been happening for 20 years or more.

Everything my agency won for this year was pro bono - not a real client. Same for most agencies. And then there's ads for real clients that come out of 'award briefs' where the sole purpose of the brief is to win awards. Usually the agency forks out for production to get it made. So unless you're at an agency that can afford to do this, your chances of winning are slim. And that's before the vote trading that is a real thing among certain groups. Are the ideas that win good ideas? Sure some of them are. Is it a level playing field? Most definitely not.

You forget the back channel politicking.

I think it depends on your market.

It still matters

This has been the issue since *checks notes* forever.

Hey team need some help - I’ve flown United since I was a child, and naturally I’ve flown with them through and through my consulting career. I just flew on Delta for the first time and it was so much nicer than what I’ve been used to. What’s loyalty like here at Delta - and is it worth status matching and becoming Delta loyal? NYC based if that makes any difference. TIA!!
