Depends on you. I used my COBRA for my first year freelancing but am now on Oscar's under 30 plan bc I'm 29 and I barely go to the doctor. I will essentially pay for everything out of pocket, but if I hit 8k they'll pay the rest. I used to pay 500/mo now I pay 160/mo
It’s really expensive but even worse would be if you lose coverage and then get on a plan that doesn’t include preexisting conditions (edit: under current Obamacare rules those plans no longer exist, but Republicans are trying like hell to bring them back).
If you’re young and healthy it might matter less, but a lapse in coverage can have serious consequences. And of course if you get hit by a bus or something and don’t have insurance, well... let’s just say “hello bankruptcy"
Whatever you do, make sure you have insurance. Period. You never know what can happen in life- even if you are young and healthy.
I'm on Cobra now, and carrying over my health/dental/vision runs me about $600/month. I looked into Oscar and other options, and it would cost me just as much to maintain this similar level of coverage, so I say worth it. There are cheaper options if you're young and never get sick, but I knew I wanted to keep my current doctors and be able to go to a specialist when I wanted. It's expensive, which blows, but that's healthcare in America.
COBRA can be implemented retro actively 3 months after you are no longer employed. I think it’s 3 months.....so don’t get it until you need it. After the retroactive period you have to start paying for some sort of insurance. COBRA or whatever you choose.
