Is corporate strategy a dead end? I don’t want to work in strategy anymore and most exit opps are there…anyone out there managed to do just a year or two and get into a line role?

Yes. Currently a director in industry Corp strat. My team purposely cycles the team into the BUs (or a function like marketing) after a 2-3 year stint. I would hope that’d be a typical model

like

The team isn’t forced to leave - only where they find an interesting role. The average time here is 2-3 years factoring that

like

Yeah. I can confirm this. I did a 5 year stint in corporate strategy in industry. Our team was all ex-consultants, considered the best and brightest. We were distributed throughout the company in leadership roles after a few years in Corp Strat. not for everyone, but definitely great WLB. I actually exited back to consulting for more pay, and then re-exited back to industry. YMMV

like

“Yeah, I did a nickel in KPMG, rough joint”

like

Yes. It’s just consulting for people who want WLB. Advancement is quite difficult in these roles, hence the “dead end” label. Most companies can do well without a corporate strategy unit, and they are seen as unnecessary and treated as such. You’re better off staying in consulting or going to a product focused role in industry.

like

This is pretty common. I was at BizOps at a FAANG company and the average tenure was also around 2 years, even though WLB was great and comp growth was very similar to consulting. The funnel at the top got very narrow very quickly, so while one could get to Director with the same difficulty of a SM / AP in Consulting, it was very difficult to advance beyond that. Most folks went into roles within the company such as Product Manager, PMM, Chief of Staff, Corp Dev, Pricing, etc. The advantage is that the BizOps/Corp Strat team is usually highly respected, so they’re willing to help create roles for them.

like

I went to a startup - that’s the other route, folks try to join a less established company and setup a process there.

like

At least in Pharma the real money and power comes when you go for a BU-level leader or a GM of a market - these roles are tough to get without previous PnL experience which can happen mostly in sales / marketing.

like

Yep

My team didn’t do this btw ^ not sure which is the norm

like

Seems to be a good launching pad into roles within a company you’re interested in though

like

The typical path I see is promotion within corp strat roles or back to external consulting. You can be paid very well for this but yes hard to become a GM without P&L responsibility

like

Do you mean corporate strategy as in internal to BCG or as in industry

I haven’t done it myself but I was in an industry corporate strategy group, and all of the people in the group were ex consultants. The pay was good for minimal stress and wlb (they were probably making 190 ish base) but with that said, the bonus structure was designed for long term retention. They all talked about how they got lots of offers from other firms regularly but they stayed with ours because if they left they would be leaving lots of money on the table. Overall I don’t think it would be that beneficial for you to do it for a short amount of time, because it seems like a place to settle in
