Some are bad, but most neighborhoods are just as safe as the safe neighborhoods of other big cities. You would have to make an effort to be in the areas that are infamous for being dangerous.
What others said. It's terrible to say, but you won't see much crime unless you go looking for it. The Loop has gotten a bit more seedy, but significant uptick in cop presence since last summer.

Chicago is super segregated. There are good neighborhoods and bad neighborhoods. As long as you’re not in a bad neighborhood it’s not dangerous.
Chicago is a grossly segregated city. This is why crime is really bad in the disenfranchised neighborhoods, but incredibly rare in the affluent neighborhoods.
Chicago has a lot more crime since the pandemic started, even in 'affluent' areas. Major hotels in or around the Loop have lost a lot of business and somehow have become much more crime ridden the past year. Stabbings, accosted women, purse theft, menacing panhandlers, shootings and other crimes are reported in what used to be 'safe' areas.

Also, this forum is oddly full of alarmists. I've encountered more of the most extreme "I don't feel safe walking outside at night" opinions on here than I have in 10 years of living in Chicago. Consider relative volume of likes and opinions as you form your own.
Totally agree. It’s comical to me
No it’s not. Never had a problem in 5+ years. Just live in a decent area and you’re fine
It’s safe in the affluent neighborhoods except for the carjackings and occasional robberies at gunpoint.
Do not get the citizen app. Anxiety delivered minute by minute!
As someone who’s lived in both cities. This factor should be eliminated from your decision tree. Have you lived anywhere outside of LA or what?
In Chicago the crime is coming to the dowtown areas that used to be much safer.
Are you a man, BCG1?
Agree with BCG1. I went to the Target in the loop yesterday in the evening and the walk just felt very different. I didn't feel unsafe, but probably 25% of the usual foot traffic so it felt very strange
It really depends on the crime. A little white collar crime? Well, the injuries are spread over many people, so each individual feels it less. It makes it *seem* like a victimless crime but it’s not. Murder? That’s clear. So yeah, crime is a really bad thing no matter how you slice it.
OP, people have different opinions. I prefer to just read the data, CPD publishes really good datasets on crime stats by Area and District.
https://home.chicagopolice.org/statistics-data/crime-statistics/
As most have said above the District that you live in highly matters. I live in District 18 which contains the Near North area. Data says YTD there have been 3 shooting incidents and 2 PY YTD. Compare that to moving more West, each district in Area 4 had 50 to 100 shooting incidents in the same periods. Note, after normalizing for population (which is how you should typically look at crime stats) this delta gets even more drastic since District 18 has higher population & density.
