Is CSM a good certification??

At your level, sure. It’s easy enough, basically a two day training and 35 question quiz with easily googleable answers. It does expose you to Agile, which is a marketable skill. It won’t teach you how to lead a project, but it will help you understand more about those methodologies. And recruiters like seeing that on your resume.

“It won’t teach you how to lead a project” because Scrum isn’t a project management process and a scrum master isn’t a project manager

C1 back off the pure theory.... every knows that most orgs slap a CSM cert on somebody and then have them be a PM

Only worth it if you put it in your LinkedIn title

Nothing to brag about but it will not hurt. I don't put the letters by my name though it is not that good

Agree with D1. It is very useful if you're going to be doing scrum development so you aren't clueless about how it's supposed to work. Scrum is a solid process.

Arrow Icon

Will deloitte pay for it??

Arrow Icon

I'm sure they will, OP, it's just like any other training.

Arrow Icon

It’s this decades PMP, basically if you want to be in tech you should have it as it will 1) teach you the language that you’ll need to be able to talk 2) teach you the pure theory (that you’ll have to fight every half ass client attempt to implement 3) make you more marketable for projects (shit there are people that are Agile coaches having never run an actual Dev team making 200k+ a year solely on that and their ability to talk)

Arrow Icon

I can't stand it when people make the comparison to PMP. They're similar in popularity trend shift I suppose but PMP was never all that practical for project management but CSM is legitimately useful for agile dev.

Arrow Icon

CSM is quite useless for commercial clients. No one asks for it nor do we put it in proposals

Arrow Icon

K1, that’s exactly what I was referring to. The value is merely in the adherence to it and the how you use it, but in 5 years every single person that isn’t an analyst will have a CSM. Non dev related certification companies are selling this cert now like PMP and I just saw several classes on Lynda on how to become an “Agile Project Manager” and it made roll my eyes. 90% of the CSMs in the next 5 years will be fraud certs that have no real understanding of the theory or intent and will be PMP’s and most clients will be looking for PMOs with an Agile cert bc they’re stupid. That’s all I meant

Arrow Icon

DD1, I have no idea what you're talking about. What methodology are you using for agile development if not scrum? Kanban I suppose? Scrum is incredibly popular for commercial work. Cog1, I see your point and agree you're probably right that that's where it's heading. I hope though that the broad exposure to CSM training may get people to start using the language and process correctly (eg a daily scrum may not be scheduled for an hour of people going on and on about status and doing problem solving during the call). We'll see.

@KPMG1 what I mean is the certification. Clients never ask if anyone is a CSM nor do we put it in our proposals that someone is a CSM
