I understand why I was never taught Korean, it was out of a desire for me to be as “American” as possible, but I’m sad that I don’t know it and I find it extremely difficult to learn it as an adult. But I do speak a number of other languages. My family in Korea has never been judgy about it but I have difficulty communicating with my older uncles and aunts, and I do feel left out when I visit. My mom says if she could do it over again she would have brought me up bilingual.
You have no need to “prove yourself” to anyone. They only hold power over you to the extent you allow them. Don’t ever feel “guilty” or “inadequate” for being who you are.
Yes I do feel that way sometimes. But as I have gotten older I feel it less and less.
My mom taught me up to a 3rd grade level. I was a pretty bad student because I didn’t see the need for it at that age. I only wanted to speak with my English speaking friends because it was easier for me. Now I’m grateful for what little I know. While studying abroad, I found local restaurants in my language where I’ve gotten special treatment because I could speak the language. And I just find it cool to be able to communicate.
On that same study abroad trip, I met people who were bi/multi lingual. Not in languages I had ever tried to learn but I was in their country so I felt a little shame for not even preparing a little.
